"It's not easy being a half-human, half-angel nephilim with a bad rep and a worse attitude who also has to learn to be human again after 11 years in Hell and a brief stint as Lucifer (yep). But that's the least of James Stark/Sandman Slim's worries. For the old gods, the Angra Om Ya, are poised to invade. LA is descending into chaos. And the Wildfire Ripper is stalking the city. In Book 6, Stark/Sandman Slim is trying to prevent the Angra Om Ya (Old Gods) from entering this realm and destroying Earth. In addition, there is a serial killer loose, who is slaughtering and dismembering those remaining in L.A. Stark is recruited by the Fed's Golden Vigil team to track down the killer. Meanwhile, girlfriend Candy is reverting to her Jade nature because her treatments do not seem effective.

Lots of malevolence and violence, as always. Stark is as snarky and offensive as ever: the pin-up boy for anti-heroes. Yet, as always, he is doing his best for mankind and the world he lives in, including teaming with a crazy dead monk to solve the mystery of the powerful Qomrama. I liked this one much better than the last few because Stark has obtained some balance and happiness in his life, and the plot made sense to me. ( )

Good until 2/3 in when it gets bogged down in an exposition dump, and doesn't quite recover its pacing. ( )

This was fun. It could be the end of the series but doesn't have to be. It's not a bad stopping place if Kadrey is tired of writing these characters. But, it can continue, too.

It amused me that in the middle of a drought in California, the book is set in a monsoon in LA. ( )

This one was slow to start, but ends in a bang. I still feel like Stark's whole relationship with the Vigil is pretty implausible, but the book works despite it. ( )

It's been fascinating to watch Sandman Slim--James Stark--change over the course of this series. He's still a dick, he'd still almost rather burn the universe down than save it, but he's different now. He has friends. Ties. He might learn to use a coffeemaker. And right now, this asshole is the only thing standing between humanity and a bunch of elder gods who want to take back their world only to kill us all. Almost nobody trusts him to save us, not even himself.

If you enjoy characters I refer to as "dickish wizards," then you'll really like Stark. He's been enslaved and ruled in Hell, he's friends with parts of God, and the hellhounds just love him. ( )
