My main problem with this short story was the surplus of bad language;
* 60 "fucking"
* 28 "fuck"
* 12 "bitch"
I think that if I went ahead beyond the first paragraphs, when Liev treats Chris so contemptuously, it was thanks to the reviews that reported a story that was worthwhile.
I'm not a prude by no means and yes, I know that teens tend to curse, yelling and to talk to each other coarsely, but when you're a writer the crude language is a literary resource and as such you can use it to delineate the characters' features; now, in this case I think that there's a notable abuse of this resource that only diminishes its punch and efficacy, becoming a niggling background noise .
Then what kept me hooked up in spite of the foul language was how I could feel the strength of the bond between Liev and Chris, the devastation and sadness of Chris' circumstances with that family that knows zero about loving, his oppressive sensation of caging and his battered self-esteem.
All in all, the bad language abuse and a sense of incompletion damaged my enjoyment of this story considerably. ( )
