Dora Saint who published under the name of Miss Read wrote many nostalgic books about British country life and rural villages. In her books she paints wonderful pictures of thatched cottages, village greens and well tended gardens. In Return to Thrush Green, she bring her readers back to the small village called Thrush Green and updates us on the comings and goings of the inhabitants. This is a world where everyone knows everyone’s business and has an opinion whether they are the local vicar or the neighbourhood busybody. The drama usually circles around village affairs from how to tidy up the local cemetery to raising money for repairs to the village school. There is a timelessness abut her books, and although they don’t entirely ignore modern times, they seem to exist in a vacuum all their own. Return to Thrush Green is a simple, heart-felt, comfort read that was gratefully picked up during the hustle and bustle of this holiday season. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

It just occurred to me: the perfect comparison. If you love the TV series Lark Rise to Candleford, you will definitely enjoy the Thrush Green books. The action may be a half a century later, but the atmosphere is similar. ( )
