The king loves this kind of pie. this is a great book, good for younger kids and talking about how the little things are good in life. (

king holds a challenge for unusual things, whoever brings back the most unusual thing in the forest, whoever wins can marry his daughter. the under dog wins by not brining anything because it made the creature sad. grades: k-3 (

This a little bit longer than other books I have saved. It is about three princes fighting for the princess. I would use this in a second grade classroom and be able to teach the lesson of kindness with it.

Three candidates to marry Princess go to find most wonderful thing in the forest. Bernard shows kindness to a creature who makes Pickle-Chiffon Pies and earns the princess' hand in marriage. This is a delightful picture book although its gender bias reflects when it was written. Illustrations are line and carefully selected color. (

… [The book] tells the story of three young men who compete to find the most interesting thing in the enchanted forest to take to the king. The winner gets the princess' hand in marriage. … But it's the suitor who comes back empty handed who wins the princess. The surprise ending shows readers that kindness trumps even the most interesting thing in the forest. The book is loaded with brightly painted, detailed pictures.
