This book has beautiful children's poetry representing the Tang Dynasty of China, its golden age of peace and prosperity. The book contains stunningly beautiful illustrations using watercolor paints. The illustrations depict Chinese cultural traditions, architecture, dress, and natural landscapes, including mountains, rivers, maple trees, and different birds. This book could help children in a classroom to learn about Chinese culture and classical traditions, beliefs, and values. According to the translator’s note, “Chinese children have always learned to read by reading poetry”. Poetry is an integral part of the Chinese culture. These beautiful poems and many others are passed on generation after generation. The purpose of the Tang poems is to preserve oral histories of a time and place long ago. The poems were written during a time of peace and prosperity. Watercolor paints were used to create the distinctive illustrations that enhance the significance of each poem. The book cover is an extension of the poem “Mountain Road” that tells of the maple leaves turning colors after the first frost. The book is a 1997 Notable Book from the ALSC. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
