At its best, creepy, disturbing, and makes you tense up like a snake's about to bite you. It makes you speculate and gives you enough information to be interesting but not enough to make it stop being interesting. Some of it I found unnecessarily heavy-handed (I find body horror to be gross, but not frightening). Still, better than 99% of the horror out there. ( ) When I first got this book I was SO excited to read it. I opened it and immediately was put off by the present tense that it's written in. The reviews were good for this book though, so I forged on. After getting used to the style it was a quick read and I must admit I loved it. Initially I thought that the ending could have been better, but the more I thought about it, I realized there's really no other way it could have ended. If you're on the fence about Bird Box, don't be. Just read it. Although the premise was interesting, this little horror story simply failed to live up to its potential. Neither the writing nor the plot were compelling enough to overcome the annoying present tense stylings and awkward nonlinear jumps through the timeline. In a story where the characters spend most of their time blindfolded, you’d think the author would make a greater effort to bring the other 4 senses to life, but instead we are treated to descriptions along the lines of, “the terrible smell was much stronger”. There were also some plot holes and logic gaps that were obvious enough to pull me right out of the story. Still it was interesting enough to keep me listening through to the end, so I’ll give it 3 stars. Audiobook, borrowed from my public library. I was unimpressed with Cassandra Campbell’s narration, and as this is the second book of hers that I’ve listened to without enthusiasm, I think I can attribute it to her and not the material she had to work with.
Malerman overreaches a bit in his debut, which could use as much attention to the cast as to the mood, but the mood is chillingly effective.
