chrisharpe: Both are books about individuals under repressive regimes, set during WWII, by authors who lived through the circumstances they write about. Although both works are "fiction", the authority of each writer is plainly stamped on each novel. The subject matter may be grim, and the detail uncompromising, but the characters' humanity shines through to make these uplifting reads.… (más)

Otto Quangel, un humilde ciudadano alemán que vive en un apartamento de la calle Jablonski junto a su mujer Anna, intenta sobrevivir al margen del régimen nazi. El anuncio de la muerte de su único hijo, que ha fallecido en el frene, le hace cambiar drásticamente de actitud y decide llevar a cabo un extraordinario acto de resistencia. Con la ayuda de Anna, empieza a distribuir tarjetas postales contra Hitler por todo Berlín. Se trata de una novela coral cuyo principal protagonista es Otto Quangel, sinistro y frío capataz de una fábrica de muebles reconvertida en fábrica de ataúdes por necesidades de la guerra, que ha perdido su único hijo en la campaña de Francia de 1940 y decide, en colaboración de su esposa, escribir y depositar en diferentes inmuebles de la ciudad de Berlín, cartas postales con proclamas contra el gobierno nazi y su política. Junto a este personaje, la novela describe la vida de otros personajes del mismo inmueble de Quangel: la familia de un nazi cuyos hijos forman parte de las SS, la de una vieja judía, la de un antiguo juez retirado, la del perverso buscavidas delator y chantajista, la del malogrado pícaro Eno y la del comisario de la Gestapo encargado de la búsqueda y captura del redactor de las cartas postales subversivas. El contexto es sórdido, la descripción de las relaciones humanas es deshumanizada y todo se envuelve con una imagen pesimista de la naturaleza humana que apenas deja vislumbrar un ápice de esperanza. Es una documento literario extraordinario de la Alemania nazi y su asfixiante represión. ( )
Every Man Dies Alone is a good book, a readable, suspense-driven novel from an author who a) knew what he was doing when it came to writing commercial fiction, and b) had lived through, and so knew intimately, the period he was writing about. This is an extraordinary combination. I hesitate to use a word like "serendipity," but cruelly enough, that's exactly what it was.
To read “Every Man Dies Alone,” Fallada’s testament to the darkest years of the 20th century, is to be accompanied by a wise, somber ghost who grips your shoulder and whispers into your ear: “This is how it was. This is what happened.”
