Charlotte Bronte's unique and impassioned masterpiece is one of the greatest love stories of all time. JANE EYRE Jane Eyre, a plain and penniless orphan, is educated at a school for orphaned girls where she eventually becomes a teacher. At 18,driven by a desire to broaden her horizons, she takes up a position as governess at Thornfield Hall and heads into the depths of fate. She is to be governess to Adele, the sweet little daughter of her employer, the arrogant, brooding and mysterious Mr. Edward Rochester. At first Jane finds him moody and abrupt, but he becomes fascinated with Jane's Independence and spirit and falls in love with her. And, in time, she with him. But on their wedding morning, Jane discovers that his past holds a dark secret, and she flees, heartbroken... Originally published under the pseudonym Currer Bell, Jane Eyre heralded a new kind of heroine -- one whose virtuous integrity, keen intellect and tireless perseverance broke through class barriers to win equal stature with the man she loved. Over a century after its publication in 1847, Jane Eyre is still regarded as one of the finest works in English literature. And, in this exclusive BBC production, with an arresting performance by Juliet Stevenson, Charlotte Bronte's exploration of how a woman comes to maturity in, the early 1800's comes marvelously and miraculously to life.… (más)

In 1994, BBC Radio produced an audio version of Jane Eyre. It is an excellent rendition, and offers another way to appreciate Charlotte Bronte's famous novel. Unlike some BBC Radio productions, this is not a "play, and does not have a full cast delivering the dialogue. Rather, it is a narration by a single performer (Juliet Stevenson). Given that its length of 240 minutes, it must be abridged; however, the plot is fully covered, or at least so such a degree that I perceived no lapses or omissions.

On listening to this enjoyable work, I was struck by its Dickensian elements of social criticism, as well as the inflexible Christian morality (frustratingly limited by modern standards). It's easy to see why "Jane" has been considered a feminist figure and admired for her strength and resourcefulness. But despite the well- crafted plot. I consider it inferior to Jane Austen's best novels; indeed such gothic elements that it contains were satirized by Austen decades earlier. (The point is worth noting, since Charlotte Bronte strongly disparaged Austen's novels).

In any case, I was glad to become reacquainted with this fine novel in audio format. Unfortunately, the cassette version is not easy to find, although currently three are available at Amazon. ( )
