Combining the eloquence and raw sensuality of Jeanette Winterson with the romantic, renegade spirit of Patti Smith, Further Out Than You Thought is a taut and erotically charged literary debut, set against the chaos of the 1992 L.A. riots, about three people searching for identity and meaning from award-winning poet and indie bookshop co-founder Michaela Carter. In the Neverland that is Los Angeles, where make-believe seems real, three dreamers find themselves on the verge of transformation. Twenty-five-year-old poet Gwendolyn Griffin works as a stripper to put herself through graduate school. Her perpetually stoned boyfriend Leo dresses in period costume to hawk his music downtown, and seems to be losing his already tenuous grip on reality. And their flamboyant best friend and neighbor, nightclub crooner Count Valiant, is slowly withering away. When the city explodes in violence after the Rodney King verdict, the chaos becomes a catalyst for change. Valiant is invigorated, Leo plans a new stunt--walking into east L.A., naked, holding a white flag--and Gwen, discovering she is pregnant, is confronted by troubling questions. Can Leo become a good, dependable father? Can she leave the club life behind, or will the city's spell prove too seductive? Combining poetry and sensuality with an edgy urban sensibility, Further Out Than You Thought is a celebration of life and a haunting story of love, friendship, and one woman's quest for redemption.… (más)

A lyrical coming-of-age story set against the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles. ( )

I dunno about this one. It kept me interseted enough to finish it but it just isn't one I could really say I would stand on the rooftops and yell to everyone they need to read. I think the writing style is what perhaps put me off a bit. All in all just an ok book for me.

This is a wonderfully written, fairly compelling book. Despite the dramatic events/settings that come together to form the backdrop for this story (strip clubs, the Rodney King riots, martial law, boozin' in Tijuana), this book isn't particularly plot driven - it's actually very introspective. Carter's lyrical prose lend themselves nicely to this type of telling. Although the main premise isn't super ground-breaking (a woman gets pregnant and then has SECOND THOUGHTS about her life/career/partner), it still felt like a nice/fairly fresh take on a not-simple issue. Some of the details seemed a little forced/overly-grandiose, but that didn't strike me as especially off-putting; the whole story/delivery was pretty cohesive. I don't know that I would run out and recommend this book to all of my friends, but I'm glad that I read it. I'm also now interested in checking out Michaela Carter's poetry - her writing style was definitely the best part about this book. ( )

This was an Early Reviewer Book. I didn't buy into a lot of characters in the book, especially their motivation (and often wanted to yell at Gwen)- however, it kept my interest enough to finish it. But I do think the author is a good writer and would read another book she might write. ( )

I received this book through the LibraryThing Early Reviewers giveaway.

I was excited about it for a variety of reasons, not least of which was that, like the protagonist, I was a graduate student living in Hollywood at the time of the 92 riots. I expected to be able to relate to it in some aspects, at least.

I did not.

I thought that, while Carter's writing is generally very accomplished, her plot points left much to be desired. She seems to be writing with a view to realism, but there were points that were just peculiar enough to make me think she was going to pull it together as surrealism.

I was not a stripper during the period in question, but my then-husband and I did own several working class bars in the San Fernando Valley at the time, and so of course we knew a number of strippers. Stevie/Gwendolyn is simply not credible as a stripper. By this, I mean that none of the details of her job were believable. She stripped to Louis Armstrong and Tom Waits. She might smoke a little weed but that's it as far as drugs go. Her employers were nice and understanding, and joked about taking it out in trade when she's late but didn't really mean it. She uses the name of a poet as her stripper name. Details like these were just very difficult for me to get past. ( )
