At first because the story was longer and more interesting to me. Ever since I visited Pompeii I was interested in how things happened in 79 A.D. Despite this book is fiction of course, I just got a tiny glimpse of the panic, denial that preceded the eruption of the Vesuvius.
The second part with short stories starring Gordianus Finder was nice, showing interesting details about life in Rome and in the other parts of the Roman empire. The detective part of the storieswas not really VERY special to me, but nice to be travelling again in Rome in ancient times. ( )
