From Robin Sloan, author of Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, the story of Mr. Penumbra's first trip to San Franciscoâ??and of how he got entangled with the city's most unusual always-open enterprise... It is August 1969. The Summer of Love is a fading memory. The streets of San Francisco pulse to the sounds of Led Zeppelin and Marvin Gaye. And of jackhammers: A futuristic pyramid of a skyscraper is rising a few blocks from City Lights bookstore and an unprecedented subway tunnel is being built under the bay. Meanwhile, south of the city, orchards are quickly giving way to a brand-new industry built on silicon. But young Ajax Penumbra has not arrived in San Francisco looking for free love or a glimpse of the technological future. He is seeking a bookâ??the single surviving copy of the Techne Tycheon, a mysterious volume that has brought and lost great fortune for anyone who has owned it. The last record of the book locates it in the San Francisco of more than a century earlier, and on that scant bit of evidence, Penumbra's university has dispatched him west to acquire it for their library. After a few weeks of rigorous hunting, Penumbra feels no closer to his goal than when he started. fiction/novella - origin story of Mr. Penumbra and how he came to the 24-hour bookstore (san francisco 1969) ( )

In this novella, we get to see more of Mr. Penumbra's life and his path leading to where readers know him from the novel, and I just thought it was a fun read. It's nothing mind-blowing, but enjoyable to anyone who loved his character. There were a lot of parallels between his and Clay's story, which I thought was interesting, PLUS we get to see a younger Corvina! I truly loved the dynamic between him and Ajax, and the fan part of me is rabid for more of their adventures pre-"Mr. Penumbra's". ( )

I came across the main book, 'Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Book Store' while i was looking for stories about people in book shops, having just read 'The Little Paris Bookshop'.

And i'm glad i did go looking. I really enjoyed Mr. Penumbra's, and was more than happy to discover this little back story, 'Ajax penumbra 1969'.

Robin has quickly become a favourite writer - i just started reading 'Sourdough' immediately after finishing this. His stories have a really nice flow with interesting likeable characters and nice easy going English.

Which should one read first? Knowing what i know now, i would read Ajax penumbra 1969 first, as i now feel that i need to go and re-read ...24 Hour Book Store again to give it more clarity. ( )

Having read 'Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore' quite some time ago, this novella acts as the back story for its main character. Given the year, the story takes place shortly after the famous SF 'Summer of Love' complete with its coffee houses, oddballs and independent bookstores. Once Ajax becomes aware of the Techeon, a Nostradamus sort of book, he learns it had been stowed in an ocean going library that sunk in SF Bay. Sent to search for it by his employer, he sets out for the City by the Bay. Having a computer wiz friend in the area is not only comforting but just what the doctor ordered!

It's fun, light hearted and well paced, and fills in the gaps left from the original. Since I've called the Bay area home for years, I always enjoy stories from the 'good 'ol days' even if I wasn't here to experience them. If you read Sloan's novel, I'd recommend you add this one to your list. ( )
