Fiction. Literature. HTML:

The new novel from the award-winning author of Breakfast with Buddha and Revere Beach Boulevard tells the story of a young Catholic woman jolted from a quietly devout life in pursuit of a mysterious calling.

Cynthia Piantedosi lives a quiet, unassuming life outside of Boston, guided by her Catholic faith. When she loses her beloved grandmother, she begins experiencing "spells" of such intense spiritual intimacy that she wonders about her sanity. Devoted to her elderly father and not particularly interested in dating and socializing, she develops a deep friendship with her parish priest. His congregation sees him as provocative and radical, but he encourages Cynthia to explore her faith--however it presents itself.

When he is killed in a mysterious accident, a message begins to emerge from Cynthia's prayers: God is calling her to be the first female Catholic priest. Her revelation is met with ridicule by certain of the more reactionary officials she reaches out to within the Church. Unable to tune out the divine messages, she lets the power of unswerving faith drive her all the way to the Vatican in pursuit of a destiny she doesn't fully understand--and a turn of events that will inevitably bring long overdue change to the Catholic Church.

Had great potential. Not very satisfying. ( )

I have read several books by Merullo and have very much liked them all, until this one. The main plot deal with the difference between spirituality and religion and I agree with the arguments and the conclusion the story leads towards. But. Since this is a work of fiction in which the greater story, its theological arguments, is embedded into a story line, the story myst be plausible. I did not feel that this story was plausible. The primary character would not have been able to make the contacts and journey she did given the mission she proposed. And those points of plausibility are bad enough, but the book's final chapter and its ending defies even the most liberal of "suspensions of disbelief."
I frequently read stories and novels that are a bit far fetched, particularly Science Fiction, but when the author of those stories offers plot elements that just can't be accepted, can't by any stretch of the imagination work, then I bail out. This book stretched my tolerance for imagined events for a long time, but its ending leapt over any chance of accepting the book as a good bit of fiction.
Its theological argument, however, takes the position more and more people are coming to today and that part of the novel, at least, was handled well. ( )

It was going pretty well but the ending went exactly where I hoped it would not go. ( )
