44 SCOTLAND STREET - Book 3

The residents and neighbors of 44 Scotland Street and the city of Edinburgh come to vivid life in these gently satirical, wonderfully perceptive serial novels, featuring six-year-old Bertie, a remarkably precocious boyâ??just ask his mother.

This just in from Edinburgh: the complicated lives of the denizens of 44 Scotland Street are becoming no simpler. Domenica Macdonald has left for the Malacca Straits to conduct a perilous anthropological study of pirate households. Angus Lordieâ??s dog, Cyril, has been stolen, and is facing an uncertain future wandering the streets. Bertie, the prodigiously talented six-year-old, is still enduring psychotherapy, but his burden is lightened by a junior orchestra's trip to Paris, where he makes some interesting new friends. Back in Edinburgh, there is romance for Pat with a handsome young man called Wolf, until she begins to see the attractions of the more prosaically named Matthew.

Teeming with McCall Smithâ??s wonderful wit and charming depictions of Edinburgh, Love Over Scotland is another beautiful ode to a city and its people that continue to fascinate this astounding aut… (más)

I find the eccentric characters in this series charming - I especially like Bertie, the precocious 6 year old with the awful mother. The books are like a quirky soap opera - once you become involved with the various people, what happens is extremely interesting. And like a soap opera, some very extraordinary things do occur but are taken in stride...

I must say I liked the second book better. I understand that, finishing the second book as he did, it was hard to go on in the same manner in this one, and I kinda felt the book suffered for it. As much as I hate Bruce, I kinda loved hating on him.

And in general, it was not so much about Scotland Street in this one, was it? The only person living there, except for Bertie but he hardly counts, was Antonia and she's hardly a long-term resident. So that was a shame.

Dominica living with the pirates was also pretty weird: I feel McCall Smith wrote himself into a corner with that one. Maybe it would've been better just to skip that entire year and start when she got back again? I don't really know.

I'm not sold on Pat getting together with whine master Matthew either. I was hoping they'd both find someone better suited for them, but oh well... ( )

The third "44 Scotland Street" book, this one was also written as a daily for a newspaper. It appeared to me that the author began to further explore some of the ways that these can be written. One has the sense that the plot twists that surprise the reader are sometimes a product of the author not completely knowing where the story is going himself.

This time, however, there is more of a sense that the book (or collection) is finished, is complete.

And once again, it was difficult to put down, largely due to each chapter so naturally flowing one to the next.

Overall, a good read, one that provides additional insight into life at 44 Scotland Street. I look forward to the next. ( )

My mother loved this author and read everything she could find that he wrote. I lost my mother in 2018 at the age of 95...so I have tried to read at least one or more of her favorite authors every year. Our tastes varied greatly to say the least, but we found equal joy in Alexander McCall Smith. Her father, my grandfather, was from Scotland...and she always said that Smith’s stories reminded her of her Dad. I read the first book in this series but somehow missed the second one...but it didn't seem to be a big thing...I could happily continue to enjoy being a voyeur in the lives of the richly drawn characters who reside in and around Scotland Street. If you enjoy character-driven stories of ordinary people facing their everyday ups and downs, you will enjoy this series. It is light and refreshing visit with real-life people with real-life problems and joys. ( )

Pat let her gaze move slowly round the room, over the figures seated at the table in the seminar room. There were ten of them;eleven if one counted Dr Fantouse himself, although he was exactly the sort of person one wouldn't count.
