Biography & Autobiography. Pets. Nonfiction. HTML:NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

In this moving memoir, Danielle Steel tells the story of how she met a dog the size of a mouse with a personality that could light up an entire room. From Minnie’s arrival at home in San Francisco to clothes-shopping jaunts in Paris, her adventures provide the perfect backdrop for a heartfelt look at the magic that dogs bring to our lives, and how they become part of the family, making indelible memories.

We meet Steel’s childhood pug, James; and Elmer, the basset hound who was steadfastly at her side in her struggling days as a young writer; Sweet Pea—unveiled in a Tiffany box for a dog-loving husband—and all those lucky dogs who shared a household of nine children, other canines, and one potbellied pig. As she reflects on the beloved pets who have brought joy, and sometimes chaos, to her home through the years, Steel also shares her thoughts on the trials and tribulations of bringing a new dog into a household, the challenges of housebreaking and compatibility, the losses we feel forever.

Filled with colorful characters (human and otherwise), delightful photographs, practical wisdom drawn from long experience, and brimming with warmth and insight on every page, Pure Joy is a love letter to this special relationship—and one of the most charming books yet from the incomparable Danielle Steel.

“The mega-selling [Danielle Steel] shares happy memories of her numerous dogs. . . . Steel brings readers into her life, recounting delightful moments with her many dogs, the dogs her children have owned, and her newest friend, Minnie, her tiny Chihuahua. . . . Plainly told with honesty and affection, these stories are an affirmation of the timeless connection between humans and their canine companions.”Kirkus Reviews

“Steel doesn’t just love to write blockbusters; she loves dogs. Here’s her valentine to all the dogs she’s raised (looking to be mostly of the small sort), with lots of black-and-white photos throughout. A heady commercial combo.”Library Journal.

I can’t resist dogs. And I guess I can’t resist dog lovers either, because when this book by Danielle Steel about her dogs showed up as available on the digital library, I decided to take it for a spin. I’ve never read one of her novels, but hey—dogs.
It was a sweet read, and I was surprised to find out that Danielle Steel has so many kids—nine! And she was married to a mad dog lover who thought each kid should have their own dog. At one point, she had nine kids, eleven dogs, and a potbellied pig. I love finding out weird stuff like this, and it was fun to read about an author I only thought of as some fancy lady who cranks out bestsellers every other month. I was delighted with the funny, down-to-earth descriptions of her life and dogs, especially her chihuahua Minnie, the dog on the book’s cover.
I’m glad I read it. I was in the mood for an animal book, and it was something light to read as my chapter a day nonfiction this month. ( )

Presents an endearing love letter to the pet dogs who have enriched the author's life, in a volume that celebrates the laugh-inducing moments, poignant exchanges, and heartfelt farewells shared by her family.

Short read of Danille Steel's love of her family's dogs. Only a dog lover understands what we do for unconditional love, they are members of our family and they make everything complete. ( )

I love Danielle Steel.

This book was just so different, it was all about the dogs in her life. I am not sure of the purpose of it except to learn about the dogs in her life and how many she has had over the years (dang!) and we thought she had a lot of children.

This was the real Danielle vs the Danielle who writes us so many fiction books.

There is no doubt that she loves dogs.

The one thing this book made me wonder is if I am ready for a dog. ( )

AUTHOR: Steel, Danielle
TITLE: Pure Joy: The Dogs We Love
Date Read: 11/06/2013
RATING: 4.5/B+
GENRE/PUB DATE/PUBLISHER/# OF PGS: Non-fiction/2013/Random House/154 pages
SERIES/STAND ALONE: SA

TIME/PLACE: Present/ San Francisco, New York & Paris, France
CHARACTERS: Danielle Steel & her Chihuahua, Minnie

FIRST LINES: There have always been somewhat comedic aspects to my life, although sometimes I don't see it that way. A family of 9 children, 11 dogs at one time & a Vietnamese potbellied pig was bound to create some unusual situations, which even I found funny at the time.

COMMENTS: If you are a pet/dog lover you will enjoy this lovely little book. Can be read very quickly. DS talks about dogs she had as a child, and all the dogs her children have had. Her main focus is her current "pure joy" Minnie -- a 2 lb Chihuahua. Minnie and she live part-time in San Francisco & part-time in Paris. She wanted a dog small enough for the frequent travel and one she could fall in love w/. She made Chihuahua's sound like very endearing dogs -- not as yappy as some other smaller dogs and they also usually have pretty long lives for canines. ( )
