The themes so impressive in later Miyazaki films are here, but not as prominent. Mostly it impresses visually, both adventurous settings and in their magical depiction, and in recognising what's to come. Several characters appear to become types: they are recognisable in other films, but not as the same people; rather, they look the same. The Boiler Man from Spirited Away is the boiler man on the pirate ship here; the General looks like one of the 3 bouncing heads in Spirited Away; Mama Pirate is similar to the witches in Spirited Away; I think there were a few others. A studio Ghibli film and it was enchanting. Pazu's life is changed when Sheeta falls from the sky. Around her neck is a glowing crystal and there are several people who want it, this chase leads them to the legendary castle in the sky of Laputa and there they discover a lot about it. Interesting and heartwarming as always. 3/4 (Good).
It's weird how boring this movie gets, given that it is stuffed with a million cool ideas. ( )
