What an amazing transformation The World After is. After reading Angel fall my hopes for this trilogy deteriorated rather quickly, and I only picked up the other two because I didn't want to give up so easily on what seemed like such a promising plot.

I am glad I grabbed the last two.

World after is a dark and almost devastating sequel and the story takes its reader on a ride through Alcatraz, already known for its history with the humans. But the angels have brought a new kind of evil to this place, creating new creatures and feeding people to them. Those who were not eaten were kept as pets or crammed into cells like battery hens.

World After shows just how merciless the angles in this story are and perhaps one of the saddest things in the tale is what happened to Penryns sister.

Very different to the typical teen novels of today, and not containing any bullsh** love triangles between overly ridiculous, laughable beings. World After had me so hooked I finished it in two evenings and I am now on the last of Susan Ee's unpredictable story.

Easily a 5 star read. ( )

Second book of Penyryn adventures. As the previous one this one is also packed with action and does not disappoint. We are again in the world almost destroyed by Angels full of scared people, gangs fighting for scraps from Angels and… yes - and some human resistance - fighters we already met in Angelfall. The world is a mess not just for Penyryn who still tries to do everything she can to service and to unite her family again. And we follow (well, not as often as we would like to ) Raffe in pursuit for his wings. Well executed sequel to Angelfall which you will not be disappointed with! ( )

This was an enjoyable follow up to Angelfall. I'm pretty tired of the typical YA plot at this point, and while World After isn't too different, I was curious enough about the reveals from the end of the previous book to stay with this series. Penryn is a solid character, very sensible and resourceful in comparison to some YA heroines I've read about. The plot, although a bit slow, also had enough interesting elements that it kept my attention.

Still, I had some niggles about it-- Penryn learning sword-fighting from dream sequences, for example, seemed way too convenient and a bit cheesy, although I appreciate the fact that it didn't automatically make her an excellent swordswoman. The world-building still left much to be desired and the setting seemed oddly empty of human beings. What happened to the rest of the world, outside of San Francisco? As I mentioned in my review of Angelfall, the apocalypse happened not too long ago, so it's not quite believable that human society would have fallen so completely.

I'm not sure how I feel about the romance. I wasn't sold on Raffe in the first book-- his interactions with Penryn seemed too much the typical YA banter between a hot, mysterious bad boy and the heroine, and I didn't get why an archangel as old as time would be interested in a 16 year old human girl. I'm still not convinced but he and Penryn make a great team when facing off against enemies. I'd definitely like them together if Raffe was really a teenage boy (he certainly behaves like one) who just happens to have wings and awesome sword-fighting skills rather than an ancient mythical being. But that is not the case here so I just feel kind of ambivalent about the whole thing. ( )

This was good but I hesitate to say I enjoyed it because most of it was terribly grim. Nothing goes right for humans or our heroine for most of the book. I missed Raffe who basically wasn't in the story until almost the end. The book did end on an upward note though thank goodness. The story is not finished so of course there was a cliffhanger ending. I hope book three has Penryn and Raffe together because that is where the strength of the story is. Three stars because the two of them spent so much time apart and also because of the horrible stuff that depressed me. But still well written and well plotted and tense. ( )
