Justina Robson (acclaimed author of NATURAL HISTORY, LIVING NEXT DOOR TO THE GOD OF LOVE and the QUANTUM GRAVITY series) is back with a cutting edge novel of science, adventure and ideas. On a world where science and magic are hard to tell apart a stranger arrives in a remote town with news of political turmoil to come. And a young woman learns that she must free herself from the role she has accepted. Always vivid, always full of stunning ideas and imagery, Justina Robson is the Clarke Award-winning author of some of our most exciting, yet philosophical SF. Probably more a reflection of my state of mind than the quality of the writing, but I've given up on this not quite half way through when I realised I had completely lost track of the characters and their motivations. Some excellent sex (in the book! in the book!) kept my attention for slightly longer than might otherwise have been the case. ( )

I have read the first two novels from this author and they were fine, from memory. This bloated thing is a complete mess, with its omnipotent heroine, looted fantasy props, and icky sex scenes. It reminds me of Late Heinlein at his bombastic worst... ( )

I gave it a good 90 pages but the characters were uninteresting, there was no discernible plot and the world-building was unremarkable, so I dumped it. ( )

A bit of a slog for me, again I think it's a mismatch between reader and book. This is firmly a new weird book, suitable for fans of China Mieville.

In a city where women are in charge, in a world without a name where in general women have the upper hand, there is a family. Tralane Huntingore is the mother, renowned as a scientist she is the heiress of an ancient but defunct and broke line of mages, she has two daughters, both different from each other and both with paths of their own.

There's a war and the strange and alien Karoo are involved and things are going badly. The three women of this family are going to be pivots in the future of the world.

I still don't know what to think about this, strange and beautiful but not me. The characters didn't quite gel with me and I didn't really care who lived and who died, there is scope for another book in this series and I might look it up but overall it was just a slog sometimes to get to the end. This one is a flight of fancy and you may or may not hit turbulence along the way. ( )
