Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow and Reds like him, are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class. Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity's overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society's ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies . . . even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.… (más)

Red Rising had a slow start, but this was necessary to build the foundation. It was well-paced after that. Unlike many closely themed novels, Red Rising weaves mythology, ancient history, and literature if you look for it. I enjoyed reading it and will reread it. ( )

I started this book really interested in it, and I liked how we were introduced to the world and to the social dynamics. But, 26% in, and I just can't get into the story, I feel no connection with the main character and his lack of assertiveness? (is that the word?) is bothering me.
Maybe I'll come back to it later on, but I doubt it.

Picked this up not expecting to like it, but I'm not gonna lie; it was gorydamn fun!

Suffers quite a bit in characterization especially for the side characters. I also found the writing irritating, clunky (especially in the beginning) and it dipped into purple prose quite often, but I feel like that was less of a problem as the book progressed. Either the style matured as the author eased into his own work, or I got used to it. My advice is not to put this down based on the first 100 pages, or so.

Overall, a fast-paced and enjoyable page-turner, and I look forward to reading the next two books! ( )

I can't be the first to compare this book to 1984 and Hunger Games, but I think Pierce Brown manages to do an amazing job of using a class/caste society to tell a rich adventure story. Throw in love, revenge, culture shock, and top-notch world building with an adolescent narrator, and you start to get an idea of this first installment in the trilogy. ( )
