A very solid study that focuses on young women (post-pubescent but pre-marital, roughly 12-early 20s) in later medieval England. Kim Phillips explores the experiences of these "maidens" with care, and I appreciated how she walks the reader through her thinking about various sources. I could see this book being good to use in an undergraduate classroom to help students think through how to assess the actions of women who had agency but within a society where their actions were circumscribed by issues of gender and class. The medieval landscape, as traditionally viewed through the eyes of scholars, was hardly populated by women - aside from the occasional dazzling queen or mistress, strong-willed abbess, or exotic mystic. This picture has been dramatically altered by the scholarship of the 1970s, 80s and 90s, as women have been restored to the medieval scene. However, to date, young unmarried women or maidens have attracted little academic attention. No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |
