Turtledove really pulled me in with this one. Makes one think I need to read more Hemingway. ( )

It is a little difficult to know quite how to rate a story that so obviously takes Hemingway and throws in few (unnecessary) science fiction elements, such as the fact that the bulls have feathers and the writer at the center of the story, who has suffered an injury in the war that the doctors couldn't quite fix, has a tail and a snout! But after just reading a few longish short stories by writers with literary pretensions and the vocabularies to go along with them, it is a relief to read something written so directly and effectively by a writer who puts storytelling front and center. Highly recommended, and available to read for free on the Tor website. ( )
