He can find a use for his lover's hands...except when he needs help the most. Kellen is short on cash--at least until his first novel starts to sell--but he has plenty of friends. None of them, unfortunately, share his love of books. For that he turns to IM chats with Mike from his online book group. Though he manages to coax the shy, socially inept pathologist into a real-time meeting, Kellen has no intention of letting his new friend become more than a casual lover. Shaky finances and ailing mother aside, self-sufficiency is Kellen's prime directive. Mike considers himself a nerd of the highest order--short, bespectacled, prone to blurting out the wrong thing at the worst possible time. Meeting Kellen face to face is the biggest risk of his life, and he wonders if they'll get more body parts together than just their faces. First meeting leads to first date--first everything for Mike--and soon Kellen's faced with breaking his just-friends-with-benefits rule. Yet as his elderly mother wanders deeper into senility, Kellen wonders if it's better to lean on Mike rather than fall. Warning: Contains an emotional love story between a too-proud-for-his-own-good writer with allergy to the L-word, and a painfully shy scientist who takes his sisters' nagging to "get out there" literally. Oh, and an adorable stray cat.… (más)

Mike and Kellen are two 40-ish guys who met on the internet and share a common love of books.
Mike is still a virgin (in every sense of the word), mostly due to some self-esteem issues. Kellen is a relationship virgin because the idea of depending on another human for comfort and support is frightening. The two meet up in real life, and quickly fall for each other (even though Kellen wasn't about to admit it to himself or anyone else). But the real relationship starts when Kellen has to move back to the house he grew up in to take care of his mother.

Sole Support was definitely hard for me to read, because about 3-4 years ago I was in almost the exact same situation as Kellen. Caregiver burnout is something I still feel the consequences of, even after all these years. I cried a lot while reading this book, but it was a cleansing kind of crying, I think, and I feel lighter now that I've finished it.

Kaje's stories to me always seem more real somehow. With other writers I'm always aware that what I'm reading is fiction, no matter how much I connect with the characters. But I wouldn't be surprised if one day I came to America and met a real Tony, or Mac, or Kellen, or Mike. It's what makes me appreciate and love her stories all the more. ( )

This book hit close to home for me. Being my Grandmother's caregiver until her passing this book brought back memories and feelings I've tried to bury along with her. There is this cloud of guilt which I could completely relate too. Dementia starts slowly and it's easy to overlook or explain away. By the time a Doctor confirms your worst fears that balance between what the love one wants and what they may actually need becomes a source of contention. Dementia slowly steals away your loved one leaving behind just a shell of the former occupant.
I totally felt for both main characters.
There are two stories here:
A 37 year old virgin finds love with a man with commitment issues.
A son dealing with his ailing mother who desperately needs the support of others. ( )
