I read the Barsoom series while in high school and really enjoyed them. A Princess of Mars is the first in the series and as such is incredibly enjoyable as Burroughs sets the environment and culture in which John Carter finds himself. I did get a little tired of the constant 1st-person narrative style, but that did not detract from the sheer adventurousness of the plot. If you have trouble suspending your disbelief that none of this is possible on the Mars we know and understand today, just pretend it is another universe in the multiverse. I am certain that I will read this again someday on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
