I never quite connected to the main characters and the secondary characters were flat and basically served as the super-egos of the main protagonists. It was a fine story, but not an particularly memorable one, despite the subject matter. I'm glad it got it while it was free. I'm going to keep trying Ms. Putney's work, but so far, everything I've read of hers has been very middle of the road.

I was really glad to see that the domestic violence wasn't a shortcut to show a really villainous villain and that it was actually our dudely protagonist as the perpetrator (not that I'm glad to read about women being abused). And I was grateful to see the psychological aspects of DV addressed, too. I thought the story was respectful and realistic.

After I finished reading, I was especially glad that we got to meet the MCs after they had both grown up and after Donovan had addressed the issues underlying his abuse towards Kate. I found it made his recovery more believable. Instead of Kate being dangled as a carrot for his good behavior, he wanted to get better for himself. I do wish a near-death epiphany hadn't changed Kate's mind, but you can't win everything, right? The story ended hopefully, with both characters aware that everything wasn't going to be sunshine and rainbows forever. My big issue is that even though I want to believe that Donovan (and by extension, other abusers) really can reform, I really don't believe it. If Kate had been a friend of mine, I would have told her to run.
