How Christmas Came to the "Jumping-Off Place," in which little Johnny Buchanan experiences his first ever Christmas thanks to the kindly Lou Gilbert, the sister of John Gilbert, the owner of the sawmill around which the ramshackle "Jumping-Off Place" was built.
When Thanksgiving Came at Christmas, which sees Grandpa and Grandma Merrifield given their heart's desire—a holiday in which all of their children and grandchildren are gathered around them, thanks to the plotting of their granddaughter and ward, Betty.
A Little Christmas Gift, in which the Little family comes to the aid of stranded motorists in a blizzard, and thereby effect a reunion between
"A Lass in Her Teens," which tells of a marriage between beautiful young Nan Bevancourt and Tom Randolph, many years her senior, and how the age difference led to a period of estrangement, eventually happily resolved.
The Green Candle, in which Catherine Ross thinks longingly of her estranged sweetheart Jock Graham, with whom she had parted badly, when she told him she could not become engaged to him while her invalid mother needed her. Subsequently off fighting in World War II, and wounded multiple times, Jock had never gotten back in touch, leading Catherine to believe he had died in the fighting.
Her Christmas Joy, which sees elderly spinster Ellen Fitzhugh, living in the Old Ladies Home, making excuses for the fact that the nephew and nieces whom she raised had not remembered her at Christmas. Little did she realize that they had the best possible surprise in store for her...
The Gate of the Shining Light, in which a wife and daughter long for the absent man of the house, off fighting in WWI—the one believing he is lost, the other with faith that he will return, and determined to keep the gate light shining for him.
The eighth of Julia L. Glover's books that I have read, Silver Trumpets is undated, leaving me unsure as to its exact publication date. My copy has an inscription—it was given to its original owner from her Sunday School—that is dated 1938, so this is the latest it could have been published, and is the date I have chosen to enter for it. Given that it mentions two soldiers returning home from World War I however, it is possible that its actual publication date was earlier. Leaving that aside, I think this is the Glover book I have enjoyed the most, of those I have tried. The stories are a little bit longer than in collections such as Christmas Candles, and are very engaging, for the most part. When Thanksgiving Came at Christmas was my favorite, and put me strongly in mind of the work of L.M. Montgomery, which is high praise indeed. Recommended to readers looking for heartwarming vintage fare for the Christmas season. ( )
