Tuppence Beresford becomes concerned about an elderly woman she meets in a nursing home while visiting Tommy's aunt. The woman has been taken from the home by a distant relative and Tuppence can find no trace of her. Things seem to centre on the painting of a house which the missing Mrs. Lancaster gave to Aunt Ada. While Tommy is away at a conference, Tuppence, "like a terrier on a trail" as Tommy says, begins her own investigation.
Tommy & Tuppence, now in their 60s, are as lively & fun as they were when they were young. One of those mysteries with "roots in the past", which I particularly like.
The Mysterious Mr. Quin
Mr. Satterthwaite, a gentleman in his 60s who is a great observer of life, meets Mr. Harley Quin, a mysterious figure who appears when he is needed to see that justice is served, especially where lovers are involved. Mr. Quin shows Mr. Satterthwaite how to remember things he hadn't particularly noticed at the time they occurred, and how to look at things he has observed in a different way in order to come to completely different conclusions. With Mr. Satterthwaite as his emissary, Mr. Quin unites lovers, prevents suicides, and even avenges the dead.
Twelve spooky & atmospheric short stories.
Endless Night
A young man meets the woman of his dreams and gets a dying architect friend to build them a wonderful house on land called Gipsy's Acre. An old gypsy woman predicts terrible things if they build & live in the house, and her prophecies start to come true.
There is a touch of real evil in the plot of Endless Night. Agatha Christie did an incredible job of writing this harrowing story. ( )
