This book is a collection of answers to the 2012 edge.org question; "What is your favorite deep beautiful and elegant explanation of how the world works?"

It's pretty interesting, and a lot of people thought of Darwin and his mechanism for evolution. Also included was the Higgs Mechanism, how people see things, the power of simplicity to make complexity and other stuff.

It wasn't really challenging to read, but it was still pretty good. ( )

I got bogged down on the first of the short works on quantum physics, time-space continua, etc.. I prepared to assign this 2 stars and promptly abandon it. But the essays got more and more palatable thanks to the more accessible topics in biology, psychology, social science, evolution, etc. Towards the end, I didn't want it to end! ( )

Ik weet dat je heel veel kritiek kan geven op dit soort boekjes (er staat te veel/te weinig in, sommige bijdragen zijn ondermaats, enz….) maar ik heb dit graag gelezen: niet omdat het coherent is, of een volledig overzicht geeft van de huidige stand van de wetenschap op natuurkundig, chemisch, biologisch, cognitief, linguïstisch en psychologisch gebied, of een antwoord biedt op onze diepste vragen. Neen, integendeel.
De vraag die aan 150 topwetenschappers (en er zijn ook een paar zonderlingen bij zoals muzikant Brian Eno) is voorgelegd is: “What is your favorite deep, elegant, or beautiful explanation?"? En dan krijg je uiteraard heel evidente antwoorden zoals Darwin’s evolutietheorie, de Big Bang en eraan gekoppelde expansietheorie, het onzekerheidsprincipe van Heisenberg, Einsteins relativiteitstheorie, de quantumtheorie, het dubbele helix-dna-model, de 2de wet van de thermodynamica, het Peter-principe, enzovoort.
Uiteraard kan je je vragen stellen bij de uitgaansvraag: wat is diep, elegant en mooi, en zijn dat wel relevante en/of coherente categorieën. Ook die kwesties worden in enkele bijdragen aangekaart. Zoals bij fysica-icoon Paul Steinhardt: “while elegance and simplicity are often useful criteria for judging theories, they can sometimes mislead us into thinking we are right when we are actually infinitely wrong”.
Maar wat me het meest bekoorde, was dat tal van topwetenschappers heel duidelijk aangeven hoe weinig we nog weten en begrijpen van de werkelijkheid waarin we leven, en hoe voorlopig zelfs de meest diepgaande wetenschappelijke theorieën altijd zijn. Neem nu de stringtheorie, over parallelle universa bijvoorbeeld, of het brein- en bewustzijnsonderzoek: allemaal wijzen ze in de richting van meerdere, tegelijk mogelijk en dus juiste, en overlappende verklaringen. Dat doet niks af aan de waarde van wetenschap bedrijven, maar het toont wel aan dat wetenschap voortdurend in beweging is, blijft worstelen met telkens terugkerende vragen en dus ongelofelijk boeiend blijft. En aansluitend: als dit boek iets leert, dan is het dat we absoluut af moeten van het stompzinnige sciëntisme, namelijk dat wetenschap het definitieve antwoord op alles kan geven! Deze vorm van wetenschappelijk fundamentalisme is absurd. En dan is het extra spijtig dat aan dit boekje zo’n misleidende titel “This explains everything” werd gegeven. ( )

Brockman's Edge question for 2012 was "“WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DEEP, ELEGANT, OR BEAUTIFUL EXPLANATION?" and this collection has some delightful answers, a few head-scratchers, and quite a lot of enlightening essays. A number of commenters complained about redundancies, but I see them as reinforcement of great explanations.
