This is the second book of a trilogy to feature larger than life hero Mattias Tannhauser, and while there are numerous references to the first book 'The Religion ' it can be read as a standalone story. Paris, August 23rd, 1572 the date of one of the bloodiest massacres in European history, and searching for his pregnant wife our hero finds himself right in the middle of it, and greatly adding to the murder and mayhem. I dread to think of the body count before the 754 pages are up. Anyone who has read a book by this excellent Author knows his penchant for bloody violence, and this is certainly no exception in all its glory detail. However it is also well written atmospheric and gripping from first to last page, with engaging characters, poignant and sad at times laugh out loud funny at others.
Totally recommended. ( )
