Interesting concept, well implemented. Nice little AU story. ( )

I had mediocre expectations to this -- only picked it up because I stumbled over it used, for cheap -- and I suppose I got what I expected, more or less. I'd hoped for more humour, but instead they're embracing the horror of the events. The story is decently told, if you swallow the ridiculous notion that characters like Doom, Strange or Thanos wouldn't be able to incapacitate Deadpool once it's clear he is coming for everyone. At the outset, this makes sense as nobody expects it, and for lower power characters like Spider-Man, his healing factor would carry the day in one-on-one combats, sure. But a simple sleeping spell or physical trap or any number of other things would stop him after that, and the book makes no effort at all at justifying why nobody does (except a hand-wave where a handful of clever characters gets mind-controlled into suicide). The story would have been a lot more interesting if more characters put up an actual fight with notable amounts of resistance to the onslaught, or just generally provided obstacles for Deadpool to overcome, rather than simply falling like sad dominos.

Anyway, the ending is well pulled off, even if it's blatantly obvious that the comic is headed towards it ever since the end of the first issue. I get the choice to focus on the gruesomeness and leave the humour by the wayside once Wade's mind is broken (or freed, as you see it), but it undeniably lessened the enjoyment for me -- and in a book where I was already not expecting to be very engaged. I was a little disappointed. Somehow I was expecting something either much darker or much more Deadpool quirky and weird. It's all in the title. Deadpool kills the entire Marvel Universe and the Universe doesn't put up much of a fight. It still had a few good moments and the meta-ending wasn't too bad but not my favorite comic. ( )
