"... As Glasgow expanded, it took in neighbouring villages and burghs, each with its own Main Street, Hill Street, Clyde Street et. These were changed to avoid duplication of street names within the city .... In Victorian Glasgow, many blocks were given individual names. In this book a "block" is defined as either a section of a street or sections of two or more adjoining streets. Whenever possible, particularly in a long street, I have tried to indicate the numbering of the blocks. However they were often changed as the street expanded so block numbers should be taken as a guide only, not as the definitive address ... Certain areas of the city posed more problems than others, particularly the main streets .... Other problems arise when the same name has been used several times in a small area, such as the plethora of Buchanan Courts in the old centre of Glasgow and the three St. James Streets in the Barony of Gorbals ..." -- Introduction.
