Caleb Krychek is one of my favorite secondary or background characters, so him having his own story should have been a joy, right? You'd think so. However, he embodies the worst of alpha-hole syndrome, even while proving he's willing to bend in the wind for his Sahara, the woman he's been in love with since they were teens (thereby proving that Silence is a bunch of nonsense the Psy have been deluding themselves with for nearly 100 years). He makes both Lucas and Hawke seem reasonable in comparison! LOL

I finally read this, if only to fill in a hole in my reading of the series. I probably won't be back this way again. ( )

I enjoyed this book more the second time through. I still feel that it has the same flaws, but they didn't hit me quite as hard this time (perhaps because I didn't go in with high expectations this time).

3.5
I am sorry to say I found this book to be very unbalanced in a way that I never have in any of the other books in this series. It was almost exclusively the love story with little of the war/ politics aspect (perhaps a 3/4 to 1/4 ratio). We saw very little (and I mean little) of the other familiar and loved characters of the series. On top of that the overall tone of the book was consistently dark and heavy with practically no balancing humour or lightness (lacking the needed levity). With the romance heavy focus, the pacing seemed very slow and left me feeling like not much had happened.
The story is solidly written with excellent characterization and character development, just as I expect from Singh. The continuance of the overall series plot, though small in this book, was well done (if a bit underwhelming for the "Psy civil war"), but I am still eager to see what is going to happen next. This was by no means a bad book, it just wasn't what I have come to expect from this series. Nor did it hold up to the hype around it. ( )

My twin sister has been telling me to read this series for years and despite liking the other Nalini Singh's I had read I never got around to reading it. After reading these books I can't imagine why I hesitated to read them ; they are really good. The story is fresh and original, the writing style is engaging and the characters are so well written that you truly get invested in their lives. I have enjoyed all the books in this series psy, changeling and human as they are all fascinating in their own way. ( )

~ 5 Obsidian Stars ~

(NO SPOILERS)

Heart of Obsidian is book twelve in the Psy-Changeling series by Nalini Singh. It stands as one of the best books in the Psy-Changeling series. I now have a new favorite! Not knowing who the hero and heroine where going into this book was SPECTACULAR! I was Surprised, Amazed, and Blown Away.

I am not going to spoil this book for anyone, because it deserves to be a BIG SURPRISE. I was floored not only by the characters, but the heart-stoping emotions. Ms. Singh is a master storyteller. Everything in this book is necessary in building a dramatic picture. The plot depends, the emotions are intense, and the attention to detail is spectacular. The main characters are real and claw their way into your heart. You can’t help but feel for them. The action is above and beyond what I could have hoped for. I was surprised with the revelations, twist and turns, and everything that we got in Heart of Obsidian.

Heart of Obsidian was a SURPRISE and I would not have wanted it any other way. Outstanding! Fabulous! A truly amazing read that left me reeling for days.

Audio April 2018: WOW!! Just WOW!! I loved Heart of Obsidian. Just loved the narration. The audio is well worth listening too.

I stopped at 61%. I never cared that much about the Psy politics part of this series, so I didn’t really care about Caleb’s motives and plans for the Psynet. Although I really feel for his traumatic and horrific upbringing, Caleb is just such a dark and violent character that I struggled to believe in and care about the romance. In the end, I realized I didn’t care enough to stick with it.
