This was really more of a 3.5 star read for me but I don't know if it was just the mood I was in, or if the book just wasn't doing it for me. I usually like the later books in this series, so I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt and say it was my mood. I can say, categorically, that I can't stand the character of Jillian, Abby's cousin. This woman supposedly has a Harvard degree but by all signs is as stupid as a rutabaga. Seriously, seriously stupid, and not nearly as funny as I think the author is shooting for (at least not to me). Otherwise, this book has great characters and an interesting plot with a mystery that wasn't obvious. Lots of suspects, a surprise in the middle, and a few red herrings. Abby becomes TSTL towards the end of the book, but as 75% of the heroines in cozies usually do, you can't fault her too much for it. Fans of the series will enjoy this one. A defining point of this book's hilarious stupidity is the way the populace peopling New Haven go out of their way to torture Abby Knight, the resident heroine. It should have, had this been a saner world, apparent to the Private Investigator Marco that at the climax of each case, his fiancee is always the one targeted. This book was totally fun to read. It was strewn with tidbits that made me think and stroke my chin. I didn't like the absence of Nikki, and her last appearance made me sad because I had nearly overlooked her absence. There is a murder here. It was beyond belief how the leads petered out and how an insane person turned out to be the murderer. There are no more complaints, I love this installment too much to nitpick. Abby Knight has her hands full. Not only is she busy running her flower shop, Bloomers, she is planning her own wedding shower to hold off interference by her cousin Jillian, her mother, and future mother-in-law. Although she has enjoyed helping her fiancé Marco Salvare, a private investigator, solve mysteries in the past she really doesn't have time for a case right now. However, when Jillian begs her for help she reluctantly agrees even though the case involves her ex-fiancé Pryce Osborne. Pryce's current fiancée is missing and Pryce is desperate to find her. Unfortunately, the missing person case turns into a murder case and Marco and Abby scramble to solve it before Pryce ends up in jail. "Nightshade on Elm Street" is the 13th book in Kate Collins Flower Shop cozy mystery series and in some ways it is the deepest. While it is obvious that Abby loves Marco, she still has some unresolved feelings about Pryce and having a mystery centered around him and his family and friends is a brilliant idea. The flower shop mysteries are written in the first-person, narrated by Abby and, while longtime readers know how Abby feels about being dumped by Pryce, it was refreshing to get a glimpse of his side of the story. Abby's character was a bit annoying in this book- she insisted on doing everything herself, even throwing her own wedding shower - but Collins does an excellent job of having the other characters stopping Abby in before she became insufferable. We see a lot more of Jillian in this book - I find myself liking her more and more with each book (there is a running gag in this book, which I won't spoil, that kept me laughing throughout the book). The other characters surrounding Pryce tended to be a bit stereotypical. The mystery itself was well written and plotted with a nifty plot twist that made the book more interesting. There are plenty of suspects and readers will be kept busy trying to figure out who the killer is. "Nightshade on Elm Street" is another fun cozy mystery by Kate Collins. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

"In addition to running her flower shop, planning her wedding, and juggling two mothers who both want to host an elaborate bridal shower, Abby Knight is facing another complication. Her ditzy cousin Jillian asks her and her longtime beau, Marco, a private detective, to find a woman who's gone missing from the exclusive beach house belonging to Jillian's in-laws, the Osbornes. The missing woman is also the fiancée of Pryce Osborne, a wet noodle with a big bank account who dumped Abby just before their wedding several years ago. Merely being anywhere near Pryce makes Abby's insecurities grow like kudzu. Then a woman's drowned body surfaces, and Pryce becomes a prime suspect in her death. Unless Abby and Marco can get a killer to come clean, their bridal shower will turn into a complete washout-- and Pryce will be exchanging a sunny beach for a prison cell" -- from publisher's web site. Abby Knight is busy dealing with her Mother and future Mother in Law, who want to take over the planning of Abby and Marco's wedding. Soon Abby is getting a call from her crazy cousin Jillian asking for help in locating Abby's ex fiancé current fiancé. Needless to say this isn't on Abby high priority list, but Pryce is willing to pay extra for them to look into the missing girlfriend, and Marco says they do have a honeymoon that could benefit from extra dollars.
Off they go to the beach home of the Osborne family. They soon learn that the couple had had a fight and had broken off the engagement. The guests at the home include Lily, the girlfriend prior to Abby, who still has a strong attraction to Pryce, her husband who has an attraction to the fiancé. There's also a loony couple who live next door, whose area of expertise is gossiping and having martinis. Soon there is a body of a woman who washes ashore. The body is soon identified as Lily. Now Abby and Marco need to sort out if it is her husband who has tired of his wife love for Pryce, or Pryce who has tired of Lily's trying to become part of life again, or maybe the missing girlfriend killed her, or possibly one of the loony neighbors, who have accused her of stealing a very valuable watch.
Wonderful series with a fun cast of characters and a well told story. Looking forward to the next book. ( )
