The French seem to have a way with producing massive omnibus volumes with the thinnest of paper, but still of very high quality, with upwards of 1500 pages. Witness this book, as well as a raft of books published by Allan Lafont/Bouquins. I have only made it up to about page 125 so far and hope to continue this book through to the very end. For me as an English-speaker, Foucault is an engimatic and exotic thinker, representing all the avant-garde radical French thinking of the mid-20th century. I have read how many people think his influence on correctional theory and how prisons are built is quite widespread. I woudn't know because I have never studied prisons or criminology, but he seems to be the smartest person that I have ever come across so far. So my next logical step is to finish this book and bridge over into some other, related author.
His style is technical, and terms related to psychology/history/politics are doubly exotic to me, first for being in French, and secondly, because they are topics I don't discuss in such depth every day. Therefore, very good for my French practice to be reading this book.
