A penguin in the South Pole received a journal in the mail and he decided he was going to record what he saw that day. In the midst of making snowballs, jumping on snow lumps, hopping on ice stepping-stones, and poking eyeballs he disrupts other creatures of the South Pole. While making a snowball it rolled down the hill into a huge snowball and ran over a pack of wolves. While jumping on snow lumps he accidentally jumped on the backs of two polar bears. While hopping on the ice stones he jumped right onto a walrus' head and he accidentally poke a whale's eyeball. He didn't notice that he was doing any of these things and he recorded that nothing ever happens in the South Pole in his journal. ( )

This was such a cute book for young children and I really liked it for two reasons. It's overall concept would be that everything we do is important and incredible. The first reason I liked it was because it was funny. Throughout the story, the penguin would go to write something down he did, but he'd change his mind because he didn't think it was good enough. Then, he would make up what should have happened that would be good enough, and little did he know, each thing he described happened as he kept walking forward. For example, he made a snowball, but then decided it would be better if it was a huge snowball that took out baddies. As he moved on to find something else to write, his little snowball rolled down a hill, turned into a bigger snowball, and took out some baddies. The second reason I like this story was the rhyming the authors used. It made the story a little more upbeat and engaging. For example, on the page with the snowball, the authors write, "A snowball that went round and round and smashed some baddies to the ground." ( )

I was a bit curious to see a penguin story from the [a:Berenstains|26886|Stan Berenstain|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/authors/1200679139p2/26886.jpg], I liked the premise, the pictures are alright and my 4 year old found it really funny. The rhyming is pretty awful however, quite a bit worse than some of the stiff, repetitive rhyming of for instance [b:The Big Honey Hunt|900087|The Big Honey Hunt|Stan Berenstain|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1344371214s/900087.jpg|885270]. The pictures are funny and are really what carry the story of the penguin. The rhyming is ok; it seems like it's trying to imitate Dr. Seuss (but this isn't as good as Dr. Seuss).

Obliviou penguin narrowly escapes several close encounters with mortality. ( )
