Fiction. Romance. HTML:

From the balcony of his house, Mike Haines can see the quiet, commonplace beauty of the Holliday farm. But what he remembers is Dusty, the little sister of his high school girlfriend, who grew up there. As a teen, Dusty had gone off the rails but when she was a kid, she was sweet, she was funny and she had a special bond with Mike. After high school, she took off and Mike never saw her again.

Tragedy strikes Dusty's family and she comes back to town. Mike thinks she hasn't changed back to the sweet, funny girl he knew but instead continued to be selfish and thoughtless, leaving her family alone to deal with their mourning. He seeks her out and confronts her in an effort to understand what went wrong and to force her to sort herself out.

He finds out quickly he's wrong about Dusty Holliday. Very wrong. After Mike discovers that, the bond they had years before snaps back into place in ways he would never suspect.

But Mike Haines had a bad marriage and then played games of the heart for a good woman...and lost. In order to protect himself and his kids, he's cautious, he's careful to read the signs and he's not interested in finding a woman he has to fix.

When he learns what happened to Dusty, he thinks she needs to be fixed.

He swings, he misses and in this new game of hearts, Mike just got strike three.

Positives & Negatives
I know! Like Ms. Ashley needs yet another 5 star review. But, what can I say.... It was just that good. I took off points for one thing. It really isn't much of a negative. There wasn't much in the mystery category. You pretty much knew who was doing what throughout, but the suspense more than made up for that.
She switched things around in this one. Quite frankly, I didn't just like or really like this one. I loved it. It may be my new favorite in this series.
Mike and Dusty are completely different from all the other main characters and so is their situations. They're both more realistic, easier to connect to. Their problems are things we hear about, see and experience in our everyday lives.
There were two passages that made me laugh out loud. Both are on my kindle highlights, but I have to share this one,
'Right, I should probably not pray to God to give me great sex, but seriously, He created Mike and gave him his abilities, He had to know a woman would want more.'
As you can see the adult romance of this story is spot on. Plenty of yummy passion.
So is the suspense. You will be completely invested in the story.
You will lose sleep because you won't be able to quit reading it.
The writing and flow of the story is some of the best I have read, and that includes other books written by Ms. Ashley herself. She has a tendency to ramble and I did not find that to be the case here.
Since there are so many reviews on this book already, I will end my review with this,
If you haven't read a Kristen Ashley book, do yourself a huge favor, get one. You will love them. I've read a ton of her books & only one I didn't care much for. She is definitely a phenomenal writer. ( )

I enjoyed this latest read from KA. I really loved the secondary story between the teenagers Rees and Fin. I liked Mike and Dusty but I felt their story wandered a bit. Usually I don't mind the length of KA's story but I felt this one could have been tightened up a bit. The characters were interesting and the real life feel of the book as with all of hers that I've read are high points. I will say though that I have it on the best authority that men don't talk about feelings and s**t with each other like these men do. I like to read it though. :-) Here again all the characters tend to sound alike what with everyone dropping words like 'if' off the fronts of their sentences and everyone 'getting' everyone else and continually telling people they've 'got their backs'. Still those are minor things and just part of the KA package. ( )

We met Mike in At Peace as Vi's reject.
I liked this book.
Dusty is a strong heroine, she stands up to him.
KA writes dealing with exes best including kids affected by the split.
Ex drama on both sides.
Another romance between a young couple takes place in the background.
I wasn't keen that he'd been her sisters girlfriend in high school, to me that's a bit ew but it has been a long time so it sort of works.
HEA. ( )

I was so glad that Mike got someone really good for him (I did feel a bit regretful about him in At Peace.. he's a nice guy and it was a touch sad to see him disappointed). Dusty was just right for him but I must say that in this book (especially in the beginning) Mike seemed to have disconnected any governers on his mouth. Talk about saying things without forethought.

Still, in the end it all worked out even with the 'mandatory tension' (and he learnt very well where his loyalty lay).

To counter this, one of the things which really annoys me is someone 'wallowing' so Rhonda really annoyed me. Personally I think her family was waaaay too patient with her (I mean it was more than three quarters of the book before she was confronted and made to face the way things were).

Overall it was a good book but still it was the least favourite of this series for me ( )

Mike is now a top 10 BBF and I've got a girl crush on Dusty.

Loved everything about this book. And by everything I really mean EVERYTHING. I have had a soft spot for Mike since he was first introduced. That soft spot turned into something so much more. He might be my favorite KA hero, and by might, he totally is. I loved his alpha, over attentive ways. I loved how he loved. Add in Dusty, sweet lord, she was a little firecracking ray of sunshine. Seeing another love story blossom in the background made this book even better.how that is possible, I don't know, but it was.

I have loved the Rock Chicks series, and the Fantasy series and went back and forth between which series was my favorite. Yet, after reading this series, it's no contest. It this one hands down. ( )
