New Jersey in the 1980s had everything Jancee Dunn wanted: trips to the shore, an array of malls, and especially, her family. But one night she met a girl who worked at Rolling Stone magazine. Jancee loved music, so she passed along her résumé. Soon she found herself backstage, interviewing a nerve-wracking parade of the famous--she trekked to the Canadian Rockies with Brad Pitt, was chased by paparazzi who mistook her for Ben Affleck's new girlfriend, snacked on Velveeta with Dolly Parton, and danced drunkenly onstage with the Beastie Boys. She even became a VJ on MTV2. She plunged into the booze-soaked rock-and-roll life, trading her good-girl suburban past for late nights and hipster guys. But then a chance meeting turned her life in an unexpected direction and helped her to learn to appreciate where she came from and what she wanted to be.… (más)

I give it four stars because it was just so much fun to read...made me laugh out loud every few pages. I particularly enjoyed the author's interviewing tips, and the stories about her parents and sisters, all of whom she clearly loves. ( )

“How could I cultivate a new, hip persona when I lived with my parents in a New Jersey suburb and wore black leggings as pants?”

Jancee Dunn’s memoir is a wonderful combination of interviewing tips, dirt-digging secrets and her own personal life snippets into a mixture that equals But Enough about Me. This just for the record has to be the first and only grammatically correct and easy to read rock-n-roll chic memoir that I have ever read. I was hooked from page one, chapter one titled, “How to jolly up a Surly Hung-over Band during an Interview.”

She trekked to the Canadian Rockies to hike with Brad Pitt, was chased by paparazzi who mistook her for Ben Affleck’s new girlfriend, got proof that Dolly Parton really loves SPAM and Velveeta, and danced drunkenly on stage with Kim Deal during a Beastie Boys set at Lollapalooza. . She even became a reluctant TV star as a pioneering VJ on MTV2. But Enough about Me is the story of an outsider who couldn’t quite bring herself to become an insider and introduces readers to a hysterical, lovable real-life heroine.

This book was light and wholesome. The best parts, because I remain starstruck after all these years, involved the author's interactions with celebrities. Her personal life was not as interesting (which is fortunate for her!).

Favorite lines:
""It's basically old man Italian food. The big thing is fritto misto, which is battered, deep-fried vegetables. It's like having some broccoli in a doughnut.'"

"'I just want to go home and make a list of people I hate, but I'm afraid that when I die, people will discover it and say that I was crazy.'"

That is basically every New Yorker's attitude.

"'Shame is not a motivator in New York.'"

"Maybe I had thrown myself into being a New Yorker with a little too much force, joining the herds that trampled over the introverted to flock around the ones who screamed Look at me!" ( )
