What is a homeland and when does it become a national territory? Why have so many people been willing to die for such places throughout the twentieth century? What is the essence of the Promised Land? Following the acclaimed and controversial The Invention of the Jewish People, Shlomo Sand examines the mysterious sacred land that has become the site of the longest-running national struggle of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The Invention of the Land of Israel deconstructs the age-old legends surrounding the Holy Land and the prejudices that continue to suffocate it. Sand's account dissects the concept of "historical right" and tracks the creation of the modern concept of the "Land of Israel" by nineteenth-century Evangelical Protestants and Jewish Zionists. This invention, he argues, not only facilitated the colonization of the Middle East and the establishment of the State of Israel; it is also threatening the existence of the Jewish state today.… (más)

From an Israeli perspective Sand can be looked at as something of an iconoclast. However, acting as an historian he demonstrates that the Land of Israel did not appear in the Hebrew Bible. It is worth noting how early Zionists also disagreed with this notion of land. The role of British colonialism and Christian fundamentalism, particularly in the US, is examined critically. ( )

The author, a professor of history at the University of 'Tel Aviv, examines how the concept of the "Land of Israel," a phrase not found in the Hebrew Bible has been developed in relatively modern times and then projected back into the story of the ancient Israelite people. He further describes how the notion of "the Land" so central to the worldview of modern 'Zionism never had the significance among the ancient Hebrews, the Diaspora or even among early Zionists that it has for most Israelis and their supporters in our day. This study of Dr. Sand also has some enlightening sections of the role British colonialism and the theology of Christian Zionism played in the establishment of the modern state of Israel. ( )
