Patricia Briggs is an author I enjoy reading and the Mercy Thompson series is my favorite series by her. I love that she books have so much to them, intrigue, mystery, romance, paranormal and so much more. I find myself invested in both the story and the characters. These books feel both new and fresh but also comfortable to read like a favorite sweatshirt. I highly recommend anything by Patricia Briggs. ( )

3.99 great genre stuff. I like the author's handling of religion. It's a glaring omission by most writers who pop a demon into their plot. This series keeps reminding me of Kim Harrison's post apocalyptic magical critters universe. Less sass but more dominance issues. ( )

Blood Bound follows Mercy Thompson as Stefan the vampire calls in a favor owed from the events of the first book. What follows is a violent, blood soaked look into the darker parts of the world Patricia Briggs has built.

While there was a decent amount of violence in Moon Called, Blood Bound out does it easily. Given that the big bad is a demon possessed vampire (as if one or the other wouldn't be enough), it's not surprising, but there are a few fairly intense scenes in here.

Plotwise, it's fairly a nice mix of thriller and mystery. The big bad is obvious from the get go, but the power behind the scenes... there are a few options for who that could be. When it's revealed though, it all makes sense, which is a nice feel for a reveal like that.

World building, we mostly learn more about the vampires and exactly what they can do in this world (which seems to be more of a grab bag, specific to individuals than the standardized werewolf powers) in addition to seeing that no matter how many magical beings there are a world, there always has to be a storyline where selfsame magical beings don't believe in something. It's always weird when that happens, although I guess eventually you do have to draw a line.

We also get a few more brief glimpses into the world of the Fae, which interests me even more, along with a timeline advancing from the Fae being public knowledge in the first book to the werewolves as well this time. That remains one of my favorite parts of this series and is well handled here, even if it's pushed mostly to the background.

We also learn a bit more about Mercy's powers. Apparently she can see and talk to ghosts? It's certainly convenient for this story, but it really felt tacked on. There wasn't much of a hint at it in the first book (although it would explain why the vampires hate walkers so much), which makes it feel like Briggs is adding powers as she needs them. It can work out, but it's a dangerous road to start down.

Characterwise, I still think Stefan is interesting. He's a vampire and you can't quite forget that, but at least he's half decent. The rest of the vampires are varying levels of crazy--the Wizard in particular. It would be interesting to get more in depth backgrounds for each of them, but on the other hand, I like where the focus of the story is around Mercy and she just doesn't have as much of a reason to dig into their pasts.

The werewolves on the other hand are brooding and all seem to be falling for Mercy, leading to something of a love square. There's still not much in the way of romance in this book, beyond a date or two and a few kisses. It certainly seems to be building towards something though. And given how many different characters are involved, I expect it will be messy... Not my favorite part of the series.

Overall, I like Moon Called better, but it's still a solid read. ( )

Blood Bound is book two in the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs. Each book continues the ongoing adventure with our coyote shifter, Mercy. It continues to develop the characters, relationships, and world.

I LOVE this series. I LOVE Mercy! She’s a kick-ass heroine. She knows she shouldn’t play with the big boys, but she can’t help wanting to help those she cares about.

In Blood Bound we dive into the dean of the Vampires and learn about their structure. Mercy gets involved with the seethe and a demon-riding vampire. She handles herself well in that she uses her connections and knowledge to locate the threat and save her friends. She’s capable and smart.

The relationships between the characters are intense. We dig deeper into exploring the Vampire world and her friendship with Stefan which is a forbidden relationship for both of them. Biggs isn’t afraid to show the amazing side of the vampires, but also the darker and edgier side. We also dig into Adams pack. I love the friendship Mercy has with Warren. I like that we learn how Adam and Warren became friends and how Warren joined the pack. We see that many don’t like Warren’s sexual preference and treat him as less or they want him out. We also see that most in the pack only tolerate Mercy, but when things get dicy she can dominate them, even Adams’ second. Mercy feels that she is despised and that a coyote has no place in a pack, but as the reader we see that she does have a place, but that she just hasn’t seen it yet.

The developing romance or romances. I am not one for love triangles and since I've read this series many times I know which direction Mercy goes, but here at the beginning we see that Mercy is not one to lead anyone on, so what will she do when her X, Samuel, comes back into her life. He’s the man she was going to be with until she found out the real reason he wanted her now she’s not sure what she feels for him. Then theirs Adam the packs Alpha and his claim that she is his mate. My heart broke for Samuel when he reveals the truth about what happened in Texas. Then theirs Adam and the developing feelings Mercy has for him. Oh my that work-out scene with Adam. Swooning! We see how she feels about Adam, but also her struggle with being controlled or losing her free will. She grew up around the wolves. She knows their structure, how the Alphas are and she’s scared. Briggs isn’t afraid to leave us in a love triangle with Adam and Samuel at the end. What will Mercy do?

We also get to learn more about what Mercy can do and why Vampires don’t like her kind. I enjoyed learning more about the coyote shifter and what her abilities are. No one really knows what she can do or they know, but don’t tell it all and just give us and Mercy bites of information. It’s these kind of tidbits of knowledge that I love and enjoy how the author weaves them in.

Narration: Lorelei King is a spectacular narrater. She does a wonderful job with the storyline and characters. I love her voices for everyone.

This is one of my favorite series and I’ve re-read and listened to it multiple times. It’s a delight and each time is always like the first. I highly recommend this Urban Fantasy series. Don’t hesitate to pick it up.
