Sir Walter Scott's 1820 novel Ivanhoe still has its fans given that it ranks in the top 500 books at LibraryThing. For readers who seek to get a flavor of the novel without committing to a work of 500+ pages, this brief audio version may be of interest. With two cassettes running to 180 minutes, it is highly abridged. However, it manages to capture the basic outlines of the plot, in part by omitting Scott's lengthy descriptions. Unlike some BBC radio productions, the work is not a dramatization. It is narrated by the well-known actor Christopher Lee, who does a good job at capturing the drama and by rendering the characters' voices in distinctive styles. I confess that I tended to get a few of the characters confused, mainly because of my unfamiliarity with the French (Norman) names. Nonetheless, I found the audio work entertaining, and the book version of Ivanhoe is now on my mental list of books that I might read at some point. "Fight on, brave knights!
