This book strives to present the story of Call of the Wild in a simple manner to encourage the readers to grow more confident in their reading ability by strengthening basic reading skills. The illustrations do a good job at backing up the narrative, enough that the gist of the story can be gleaned through the images alone. However, the illustrations are dark and heavy and seemed to weigh down the narrative. This may be a conscious decision to make the illustrations match the seriousness of the story, which is full of violence and the struggle to survive. Throughout the book, there is also a conscious decision to color dialogue boxes yellow and exposition boxes blue. Because of this format, it becomes possible to focus on one aspect of the story or another, and also to see how dialogue and exposition interact with one another when creating a cohesive narrative structure. The dialogue and exposition were kept fairly simple, with short action-based sentences; however, at a certain point the story tries to showcase the idea of English as a second language by using poor grammar in the dialogue boxes of French characters. This speech felt jarring and at times made the narrative difficult to understand. Overall, the book does a good job at simplifying the story, but has some noticeable faults.
