Some of the tension felt a little forced and I guessed who one of the bad guys was relatively quickly but overall it was a good read that I could barely put down.

Destiny "Dusty" Everhart is a nightmare, literally, Half-magical she didn't appear to be magical until she wasn't and then she was transferred out of her high school to Arkwell Academy, which is a magical boarding school where she's treated differently because her mother is problematic and keeps finding loopholes to the spell that stops magical folk from going to war with each other and mundane folk.
Dusty has to feed of people's dreams, her latest dreamer is Eli Booker, who is dreaming of murder in the school. But when she tries to make him forget her the spell bounces off him. His life is now changed because they are part of a pair of dream-seers and he has to learn about the magical world they are in to survive.
Some of what pans out is obvious but there also was a lot of not telling someone something pivotal to keep them safe, which NEVER works. ( )

This book is a mystery fantasy story, it mostly takes place at a boarding school which reminded me of Harry Potter. There are several fantasy creatures’ races but we don’t get much information of some of them, which I hope will change in the second and third book.

The book starts with a strong first chapter that sets the mystery and the rest of the book is about getting clues and piecing them together to find out who the murderer is and who will be the next victim and why.

Besides that there is romance and teenage drama. My favorite bits were definitely the mystery ones when they try to get information about their suspects.

I liked the characters thou I sometimes felt Dusty was annoying, which I think made her a more credible teenager character, she had a bossy and kind of “I don’t need help” type of attitude. The only thing that really bothered me was that she was kinda horny sometimes and sometimes I felt those thoughts of her were out of the place due to all that was happening. The book is in first person, so we only follow her perspective.

There is romance in this book, which I don’t usually like, but I liked it here, there is a love triangle and I actually liked the second dude better than Eli, he was nice and cute, and the romance was not the main focus in the story, which I liked. The characters were really cliché, the mean girls, the prankster, the rebel girl, Dusty was the hot girl that didn’t know she was hot, Eli was the typical hot athlete and the second love interest was the nerdy but cute boy. There was a lot of teenage high school drama.

The book ended in a very conclusive way, it works well as a standalone, so I don’t really know what will happen at all in the next books because there was no cliffhanger or anything at the end.

This is a fast paced and light fantasy read, mixed with romance and mystery, it’s really entertaining but with many teenager high school drama cliché. I recommend it to you if you are looking something light and entertaining to read. ( )

Thank you Sharon J for recommending this series to me. This was an incredible read. The story was a fast-paced paranormal mystery. The world was intriguing and different. The dreams were really creatively done and beautifully written. I thought that the characters were fantastic. Dusty is 16-year-old, who breaks into houses at night, and is a dream-seer aka a Nightmare. She attends Arkwell Academy, a boarding school for the magickind, and is the only Nightmare in the school. Eli is another favourite character. I really loved his personality and I really love how he interacts with Dusty. I think they have chemistry. Eli is hot, and I want more of him. I hope we can learn more about him as the series progresses. I loved the plot as a whole, and I cannot wait to see where Book 2 will take us. I am really excited to see what happens to Dusty and Eli's character. Overall, an amazing read. ( )

This was a cute, quick, fun read! It was fast paced, and engrossing. I really enjoyed Dusty as a character and how she really grew into herself as the novel progressed. She still has a bit to go, but I liked where she was headed.

This was a fun, paranormal teen romp with Magickind and Ordinaries living in harmony (even though humans don't know about the Magickind). It was a really cool concept and I really liked the different "kinds." The world was built up quite well and I enjoyed learning about it as Dusty did.

The writing was pretty good for a light, fluffy, teen novel and I found it very readable.

There was one line about schizophrenia in here that I didn't like, but overall it was a fun read. ( )

The actual summary of this book isn't what first interested me. No, I was intrigued by the idea of the main character being a nightmare. I wanted to know what exactly that meant and what powers she had. Did she create bad dreams and those dreams were her fuel? Could she just manipulate the dreams? How does this murder tie in? I was hoping for something a little less bubblegum-ish and a whole lot of twisty darkness. While I enjoyed reading The Nightmare Affair the whole thing read like a Scooby Doo episode complete with "I would've gotten away with it, had it not been for you meddling kids!"

Sure, there were some twists but if you were paying attention then those twists weren't all that surprising. There is also a splash of romance, but honestly neither one did much of anything for me. You also have some other magical, mythical creatures who can do some really cool stuff. I almost wish this book hadn't been about solving these murders and more about the school and the people in it. That to me could have been slightly less predictable and a tad more exciting.

Overall:

While this wasn't as dark as I had hoped The Nightmare Affair was a fun read. I kind of doubt I'll read any further into the series but I bet if you loved Scooby Doo and Nancy Drew then you will LOVE this. ( )
