A 15-year-old girl named Jessie voices typical--and not so typical--teenage concerns in this unique, hilarious collection of poems. Her musings about trying out new makeup and hairstyles, playing volleyball and cello, and dealing with her annoying younger brother are never boring or predictable. Who else do you know who designs her own clothes and writes poetry to her cat? Jessie's a girl with strong opinions, and she isn't shy about sharing them. Her funny, sarcastic take on high school life is revealed through concrete poetry: words, ideas, type, and design that combine to make pictures and patterns. The poems are inventive, irreverent, irresistible, and full of surprises--just like Jessie--and the playful layout and ingenious graphics extend the wry humor.… (más)

This is the best book on concrete poems I have ever seen. The poems are hilarious, and I wish I would have had it when I taught 7th grade English. Kids will love it! ( )

Blue Lipstick is a book of concrete poems written from the perspective of Jesse, a teenage girl. She is very real and no-nonsense in her descriptions of day to day teenage life. I was struck by how well, John Grandits does in showing a true understanding of what teens (boys and girls) are going through via poetry. I was also impressed by his use of the concrete poem. The structures/pictures were very effective in adding to and relating to each poem individually. While I do think elementary aged kids would be capable of reading Blue Lipstick, I would recommend this it for grades 7 and up to fully get the messages the author is trying to convey. This was a very relatable and fun book!

This poetry book is really a really fun one to read. The poems are very random and good for older elementary to middle school students. It would be perfect when teaching how to write shape poems or when teaching that not all poems are rhyming. ( )

Poetry book does not begin to explain this book. It has a great abundance of styles, shapes and themes dealing with poems that readers can enjoy. Grandits helps by showing the reader that traditional style poetry is not wrong, but the limits of inspiring poets is endless. Whether it is for pleasure or to supplement a poetry lesson Blue lipstick does not disappoint.
The artwork does the book justice but not to the extent it looses intent. ( )

Very cool concrete poetry book. Upper middle schoolers will appreciate this book, as it is filled with poems that relate to their lives. ( )
