Après plus d’une quarantaine de Maigret, je remarque de plus en plus différentes périodes d’écriture et les derniers opus (dont celui-ci) me semblent vraiment meilleurs !

Simenon à moins besoin « d’en faire », les intrigues sont moins tortueuses, l’action plus lente et les personnages ont plus de corps.

Certes, si l’inspecteur boit toujours, c’est avec plus de modération, mais sa pipe n’a que rarement le le temps de refroidir ( )

For all my reading of the Golden Age of Crime I have yet to do a very thorough run through of Georges Simenon's Inspector Jules Maigret novellas which number a rather incredible 75 out of the author's over 400 books. I've started to amend that with making a chance pick of #74 Maigret and the Informer and an intentional seasonal pick of A Maigret Christmas And Other Stories, 3 short stories of which 2 are not Maigret.

Maigret and the Informer involves the murder of a Parisian restauranteur with connections to organized crime. The culprits become apparent fairly early in the investigation, but Maigret needs proof to close the case. Some of that information is provided by the informer of the title, although they appear to be withholding on the complete story. Maigret solves the case with instinct and forensics along with a jaunt to the south of France. Madame Maigret plays her regular cozy support role and Maigret's assistants from the Police judiciaire do a lot of the leg work.

This edition of Maigret and the Informer is part of the recent series of new translations by several translators, all published by Penguin Classics over the years 2014 to 2019. Maigret and the Informer was adapted for French television in 1979 as Episode 43 of Les enquêtes du commissaire Maigret (The Investigations of Commissioner Maigret) (1967-1990) with Jean Richard as Inspector Maigret. ( )

A slightly different flavour of the Maigret novel - he seems to drink and smoke less in this one. Much of the story is conveyed in short one liner dialogue. Montmartre plays a dominant role and although justice is done, there remains uncertainty at the end. ( )

A late Maigret, with a sense of recollection in tranquility. Maigret is cutting back on smoking and drinking. Various man-woman relationships are explored, with that of the Maigrets an unsentimental but deeply attractive backdrop. Montmartre, that "ville dans une ville," is a character in itself. There's also a murder.

Maigret bliver ringet op om natten af Lucas. En kendt restaurantejer Maurice Marcia er blevet myrdet og efterladt på Avenue Junot. En lokal kriminalbetjent, Louis, er vokset op i kvarteret og kender det som sin egen bukselomme. En anonym stikker har tidligere givet ham nyttige tip og nu fortæller han at morderne er brødrene, Jo og Manual Mori. De gør i tyverier af antikviteter fra slotte, men politiet har ikke kunnet hænge dem op på noget.
Marcia er ældre end Maigret, først i tresserne og hans kone Line er meget yngre, højst tredive. Hun siger at hun vil køre restauranten "La Sardine" videre, men hun har meget sjældent været der. En af Mori brødrene kommer til at røbe at stikkeren hedder Loppen og så kender Maigret ham godt, for han har i lang tid færdedes i de kredse. Loppen har sit tilnavn, fordi han kun er halvanden meter høj. Hans rigtige navn er Julien Crotton. Maigret og Louis finder Loppen og tager ham ind på stationen. Han er nervøs af en eller anden grund, som ikke bare er at Mori brødrene er efter ham, og Maigret tror ikke på alle detaljerne i hans historie. Maurice var bagmand for en større bande, som Mori brødrene forsøger at overtage kontrollen af, så Maigret ved at de vil hyre de bedste advokater og købe de bedste falske vidner, som penge kan købe. Bedste chance er derfor at sætte de skyldige op mod hinanden, så han arresterer Line og de to Mori brødre og plottet lykkes over al forventning. Line og hendes elsker, den ældste af brødrene, beskylder gensidigt hinanden for drabet og da Loppen kan bevidne at han blev betalt for at ringe til Maurice og fortælle at hans kone lå i en anden mands seng, så er det ikke bare drab, men overlagt mord og de to får tyve års fængsel hver.
