At the dawn of the Twentieth Century, the world is changing for women. More girls of a certain class are being educated and able to make their own living. When Claudia Thomas graduates from the newly formed Burnham College for Women, Class of 1880, she is not ready to trade the life of the mind for a husband and a house in town. She chooses to further her studies in Germany, to buy time before she meets her family's expectation of marriage and children. Her plans are interrupted when she meets Jeanette Taynor, walking in the park. Mrs. Taynor is a young widow, employed as nanny in the home of a rich businessman. Whilst I really enjoyed the book, I did feel that it lost momentum towards the end. However, that said, the author has extremely intricate and accurate references to the era she is writing in, making for an interesting historical read. The characters were realistic both within the different social circles they moved within but also on their own merit. Overall a very well written and thought out novel that was most 'unputdownable'. (I read it in one sitting)
Despite my slight (and it is but very slight) disappointment of the vaguely lackluster ending, I would recommend it and I would certainly read it again. ( )

Claudia Thomas is a modern woman in the 1880s; educated and experiencing life in Europe, while postponing marriage to her fiancé Robert. While in Germany, she befriends Jeanette, the widowed nanny of a wealthy family, a friendship that crosses the boundary of social classes. From this friendship blooms a deeper relationship. When life happens and time passes, this love is never far from their minds.
Kathryn Ewers Bundy has spun a tail that is romantic, painful, enchanting and haunting. The endearing quiet charms of Jeanette and the charismatic individuality of Claudia are the building blocks of this well crafted novel. From the first word to the last, I was captivated by the story of these two women.

Reminiscent of Sarah Waters’ style. ( )

Heidelberg, Germany July 1880             Claudia Thomas adjusted her bonnet after a sudden wind caught the brim and knocked it sideways. She could feel the hairpins shift at the back of her head, poking her scalp uncomfortably. She knew she should repair it, but there was no place to do so inconspicuously while she was sitting in the park. She gave the bonnet another tug and pushed her hair into its recesses, then picked her book up again. Her German tutor had set her to studying Goethe’s, and it was slow going.
