Thomas Pitt, once a lowly policeman, is now the powerful head of Britain's Special Branch, and some people fear that he may have been promoted beyond his abilities. He, too, feels painful moments of self-doubt, especially as rumors reach him of a plot to blow up connections on the Dover-London rail line--on which Austrian duke Alois Habsburg is soon to travel to visit his royal English kin. Why would anyone destroy an entire train to kill one obscure Austrian royal, or are the rumors designed to distract Pitt from an even more devastating plot? He must resolve this riddle at once, before the damage is done. Meanwhile, in a London sickroom, an old Italian woman--at the end of a romantic career as a revolutionary spy--is terrified that as she sinks into dementia, she may divulge secrets that can kill. And a beautiful young Croatian woman, married to a British power broker, hoards her own mysteries. Apparently all roads lead to the Continent, and Pitt suspects that between them these two fascinating women could tell him things he desperately needs to know. But as the hours tick by, it seems that the only woman Pitt can count on is his clever wife, Charlotte.… (más)

Well done! It was good to see Pitt settling into his role as head of Special Branch. I enjoyed this installment in the series much more than the last 2 ( )

Anne Perry has always amazed me with the sheer volume of books she has churned out over the years. I enjoy all her books, but this series with Charles and Thomas Pitt, has to be my favorite. Things are a little different in this newest tale, because Thomas has been promoted from the Metropolitan Police to the head of Special Branch. Pitt is finding the waters a little more difficult to tread and he starts second guessing himself as he works on an possible assassination plot brewing on British soil.
Charlotte's Great-Aunt Lady Vespesia also gets a bigger part in the novel, as she tends to a dying friend, whose dementia is threatening to reveal government secrets she acquired during her years as a spy.

Over the years some of Perry's plots have failed to deliver, but I'm glad to say this wasn't one of them! ( )

My fave author does it again! I have read this entire series and have grown to love these character's. Perry sweeps us up into Victorian England better than any other. This was a complex plot filled with political intrigue and a terrific mystery.
Loved it and Highly recommend this to anyone who loves this genre. ( )

Anne Perry is the master of the Victorian Mystery. But, more than that, I somehow felt like I came away with a big history lesson with this one, which makes her a master at research! Pitt has a huge job in his Special Branch position--if you are an Anne Perry fan, the ending will surprise you, I think we will start seeing a different side of Pitt now. Really, really enjoyed this. It’s February 1896, and in the 25th book of Perry’s series starring the redoubtable English copper, Thomas Pitt, Pitt undertakes the case of his life. If he missteps in his dealings with villains from the Balkans, the mistake could trigger an all-in European war.

This is breathless stuff as always with Pitt and his equally game wife Charlotte, though her contributions aren’t as fundamental as in past books. What is intriguing for history buffs is that the book’s circumstances anticipate the real-life events at Sarajevo in June 1914, which plunged Europe into the First World War. Too bad Pitt wasn’t around then to head off the deluge.
