A whole day is plenty of time to finish your homework or go to the park, but did you ever imagine that in a single day you take around 8,000 steps; 100,000 of your taste buds are replaced; a bat eats up to 1,000 insects; 27,000 trees are cut down just to make toilet paper in the United States; and a mayfly lives its entire life? Every Day on Earth celebrates the amazing events that happen each day in an attempt to get readers appreciating the planet for the wonder it is. The facts are divided into several categories, including living things, food, the human body, sports, and technology. There is a category to intrigue a wide variety of children’s interests. Children need not read the book cover to cover, but can flip around until they find an interesting section, header, or illustration.
Each page begins with a bolded sentence in bright letters with a question, riddle, or an impressive fact that acts as a hook. The book illuminates such major events as the speed of a hurricane, as well as silly little facts, such as the number of times a six year old laughs in a day.
A few of the pop culture references are already outdated, but still interesting. Most of the facts are about ongoing natural processes or explain where everyday items such as chocolate chip cookies come from. Children will still be curious about these explanations in years to come.
Bloom’s cartoon illustrations are lighthearted and irreverent, and reflect human diversity. Children will enjoy flipping through the pages of this colorful book and sharing their new-found knowledge with others. Recommended. ( )
