This fun 4th/5th grade read is about a girl who would really like to make a difference in the world, but makes some mistakes along the way.

Would be wonderful to read this book, then make compost bins or worm habitats as a tie-in activity. ( )

This is a really nicely written story for middle grade readers. We read this aloud while waiting for the bus in the morning. The characters were believable and fun. This is part of a series and we look forward to looking into the first book next. ( )

Marty McGuire is a third grade girl who trays to save the earth. An environmentalist visits the her classroom and challenge the students to make projects to save the earth. With help from her grandma and friend Annie, McGuire chooses to use earth worms form her grandma's garden to turn the trash in the school cafeteria into fertilizer. Other kids made a metal buzzer to detect recycled things inside garbage. The book consists of 23 chapters. Each chapter is like a diary where she talks about the things that happened that day. ( )
