In this thrilling mystery, "brilliant, feisty, independent" forensic archaeologist Ruth Galloway and DCI Harry Nelson investigate a seemingly cursed collection of Aboriginal skulls that are causing people to die from a mysterious fever--and the next person to fall ill is Nelson himself (Richmond Times-Dispatch). When Ruth Galloway arrives to supervise the opening of a coffin containing the bones of a medieval bishop, she finds the museum's curator lying dead on the floor. Soon after, the museum's wealthy owner is also found dead, in his stables. DCI Harry Nelson is called in to investigate, thrusting him into Ruth's path once more. When threatening letters come to light, events take an even more sinister turn. But as Ruth's friends become involved, where will her loyalties lie? As her convictions are tested, Ruth and Nelson must discover how Aboriginal skulls, drug smuggling, and the mystery of the "Dreaming" hold the answers to these deaths, as well as the keys to their own survival. "Lovers of well-written and intelligent traditional mysteries will welcome [Griffith's] fourth book . . . A Room Full of Bones is a clever blend of history and mystery with more than enough forensic details to attract the more attentive reader."--Denver Post "Galloway is an Everywoman, smart, successful, and a little bit unsure of herself. Readers will look forward to learning more about her."--USA Today… (más)

Elly Griffiths is an excellent writer; when reading her books it is effortless, you are in the story and so immersed that you do not feel you are reading at all. The following quote from Ursula Le Guin expresses it well:

Most of us, Le Guin writes, “tend to live in the Department of Fuller Explanation” when writing; “We are telling ourselves backstory and other information, which the reader won’t actually need to know when reading it...decide—or find out when revising—whether the information is actually necessary. If not, don’t bother. If so, figure out how to work it in as a functional, forward-moving element of the story… giving information indirectly, by hint and suggestion.”

Griffiths does this exceedingly well.

While I may not agree with certain "life choices" of some of the characters (harumph!), I am extraordinarily fond of most of them (sorry, "Phil"). The plots have been realistic, she plays fair with the clues, and I get a lovely bit of info in the archaeology line.

What's not to love.

note: I rated this book lower than the others because of unnecessary overabundance of plotlines, and the excessive "woo-woo".

Another in the Dr Ruth Galloway series. This wasn't my favourite one but I enjoy meeting the characters again. This time the focus is on a wealthy local family with stables and a family museum. Kate, Ruth's child, is now one year old and we find Ruth struggling to be a single parent and an academic. There is plenty of mystery and mysticism under the Norfolk skies. ( )

A Room Full of Bones is written by Elly Griffiths. It is Book #4 in the Dr. Ruth Galloway Mystery series.
“ When Dr. Ruth Galloway arrives to supervise the opening of a coffin containing the bones of a medieval bishop, she finds the museum curator lying dead on the floor.”

This series is very interesting and well-plotted with intelligent characters and lots of information about forensic archaeology, mysticism and police/detective work.
A very clever blend of history and mystery.
I confess that I have become addicted to this series. ***** ( )

Room Full of Bones is the fourth book in the Ruth Galloway series. In this one Ruth goes to a museum on Halloween to supervise the opening of a medieval coffin containing the remains of a Bishop. When she arrives the curator is found dead by the coffin and the story goes on from there.

I always like to read books in order and in this case I thinks it's best because of the ongoing relationship between Ruth and Nelson. I have to say though my favourite character is Cathbad. When visualising the characters I can't help thinking of Professor Ronald Hutton.

This story has the usual twists and the plot plods along quite nicely with everything being tied together and explained. My only thing with this particular story was that there was a lot of references to snakes. I have a big phobia of snakes so was cringing when reading the book alot.

There is still plenty in the series so far to keep my interest so it won't be long before I read book five. ( )

While Ruth is dealing with her soon-to-be one-year-old daughter, she's called to a small museum to witness the opening of the coffin of an ancient bishop whose coffin was discovered during a construction project. She arrives to find the curator dead on the floor.

Meanwhile, Nelson and his team are investigating an increase in the drug trade and having no luck discovering the source of the new drugs. Nelson is also struggling to hold on to his marriage after the revelation that Ruth's daughter Kate is also his daughter. Currently, he has agreed not to see Ruth or Kate again outside of necessary police business.

When Lord Danforth Smith, the wealthy owner of the museum and racehorse trainer, also dies in suspicious circumstances, the case gets more complicated. He has been the target of agitators who want him to return Australian Aboriginal bones collected by his great-grandfather to Australia.

The situation gets even more perilous and complex when Nelson also falls ill. Is it the same curse that fell the curator and Lord Smith? The hospital is baffled and Nelson is near to death when Cathbad decides to go into the Dreaming and bring him back. His illness also causes his wife to got to Ruth to see if she can pull him back to life.

This story combines drug smuggling, animal rights activists, and repatriation of ancient bones into an engaging mystery. I especially liked the information about the "Dreaming" and the sort of mystical aspects Cathbad, a returning character, added to the complexity of the mystery. ( )

The English writer Elly Griffiths loves contradiction. In A Room Full of Bones, she gives us a possibly homicidal animal rights’ activist married to a trainer of racehorses. Then there’s the recently wedded police detective, female, who is having an affair with a man who turns out to be a suspect in a murder case. And, also typically for Griffiths, we get the dashing druid whose day job is as a dreary man of science at its most humble level.

This list, tantalizing in its promises, doesn’t include Griffiths’s two central characters, both of whom, adorable as they are, represent scads of contradiction. DCI Harry Nelson is the ace sleuth in all of North Norfolk, somewhat abrupt by nature and super organized (Harry loves lists). Ruth Galloway, rather overweight and inclined to the solitary life, heads up the forensic archeology department at the University of North Norfolk.

In the previous three books in the series, Harry and Ruth were frequently thrown together in the interests of solving murders. On the one momentous occasion they slept together, the intimacy led to Ruth’s pregnancy and later to the birth of Kate. A baby daughter suited the single Ruth just fine. Harry, on the other hand, had to answer to the beautiful Michelle, to whom he has been happily married for 20 years.

In the new book, the triangle of cause and effect involving Harry, Ruth and Michelle is played for all it’s worth, which is plenty in terms of melodrama. The current state of the complicated relationships pumps up the emotional level over that of the earlier books, giving a new density to the series, a sense that events are no longer taking place exclusively on the surface.

Meanwhile, Harry and Ruth must deal with an inexplicable upswing in local drug trafficking, two unfathomable deaths, some funny business at a horse racing stable, numerous interventions by the druid fellow, and countless episodes of mysterious contradiction. Just typical reading time in the company of Elly Griffiths’s friendly, funny and involving series.
