This "Popular Exposition of the Gospel According to Matthew" was the last work written by C.H. Spurgeon and was published posthumously the year after his death. "During two previous winters in the South of France, a great part of dear Mr. Spurgeon's leisure had been devoted to the production of this Commentary," wrote Mrs. C.H. Spurgeon in her introductory note to the volume, "and it bears much internal evidence of the brightness of the sunny shore where it was written." She went on to add that "till within a few days of the termination of his lovely and gracious life, he was incessantly occupied in expounding this portion of God's Word." The emphasis of this exposition, as may be seen from its title, is the Kingdom of God, and most importantly, the King Himself, the Lord Jesus Christ.
