Meet the people who refuse to believe it is happening, those who discover they are not prepared, and those few who will survive because of Phontaine's Gifts. In this anticipated prequel to "The Scoloderus Conspiracy," D.A. Blankinship tells a forceful tale about wide-spread devastation in North America and how people cope with the overwhelming crisis. He takes us into the plans of a technology entrepreneur who has ominous doubts about entrusting computers and the Internet with the information vital to surviving a national disaster. He lets us participate in the struggles of a grocery store manager when thousands of people crowd into his empty store, desperately searching for food. An interesting book to address the question of what would it take for the world and the human race to survive a disaster that destroys the world and its technology as we know it. A message of sustainability and about importance of preserving skills and knowledge that our increasingly technological world may be losing.

The first half of the book was a fast-paced action story that drew a vivid picture of what was coming and disaster striking. The ending, however, seemed a little rushed and seemed to come together quickly and conveniently. I would have enjoyed seeing that part of the book developed more or I would love to see a follow saying what happens next.

Finally! A realistic apocalyptic novel - no zombies!

This book is a prequel to "The Scoloderus Conspiracy."

"Phontaine's Gifts" is a detailed account of the events described in the first chapter in Scoloderus. It is also the story of how the archives described in Scoloderus came to be and explains the rise of the "United Americas Trade Federation," which is the central power in Scoloderus.

The events in this book are eerily similar to current earth events (like China's earthquake; Japan's tsunami). The global cataclysms described seem almost prophetic. This book follows the lives of three groups of people as their lives change from mundane to dramatic. It is a spot-on, well written description of everyday life (kids, work, family events; you're going to recognize yourself or someone you know). It is a very believable story of what happens when things start to go wrong - with characters reacting like real people who cope, believing everything will be fine (just a glitch)... then they realize that their life (society itself) is collapsing. The story goes from group to group telling this tale from the perspective of each set of characters (family, government, politicians). I like the fact that the story isn't "tied up in a neat little package with a bow." The story, like reality, doesn't really ever end... while everything/everyone has changed, life goes on.

I bought the paperback to keep on my bookshelf - right next to "Alas, Babylon" and "The Scoloderus Conspiracy." ( )

Information is the foundation of the human race. What we know determines our options, our options set the ceiling on our success, and our successes determine whether we survive—as individuals and as the human race.

Writing a book is a voyage of research, creation, discovery, validation, obsession, and re-writing. The voyage begins with the familiar and rises beyond the possible into new spheres of reality. Many amazing people shaped this story and I am grateful to everyone who helped directly and indirectly to make Phontaine’s Gifts possible.I am grateful to the men I knew who served in naval special forces during the Viet Nam War. Their stories helped me realize the extraordinary endurance and achievement that is possible when people know what to do and how to do it. The SEALs and the River Rats provided me with an informal education of how tough humans can be and how courage can be a way of life.

I am grateful to Dr. Getachew Tikubet of the Addis BioFarm in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He introduced me to sustainable farming and its promise for ending extreme poverty in developing countries.

Dr. Aseffa Abreha of the Ethiopian Social Rehabilitation and Development Fund allowed me an insider’s perspective of planning at the level of national development to help communities provide for their needs. He also invited me to assist in helping Ethiopia recover from decades of famines, wars, and droughts.

Dr. Donald C. Johnson, Word Health Organisation, retired, mentored me on the intimate relationship between all facets of a community and the health of its members. His profound wisdom shaped my appreciation for the importance of viewing every problem within the context of the greater community.

To my friends and colleagues at Praxis Ethiopia, I am grateful for your perspectives on sustainable farming, the intricacy and delicacy of the eco-system, the value of integrated pest management, the power of solar energy, the value of organic fertilizer, the impor-tance of alternative energy sources, and the list goes on and on.
I am indebted to my family for their patience and encouragement during the time required to write, edit, and prepare the manuscript.Everything great about Phontaine’s Gifts reflects the contributions of many people; any errors are mine and mine alone.

“I believe,” Newton said slowly, deliberately, “Andrew Carnegie knew information is the foundation of the human race. What we know determines our options, our options set the ceiling on our success, and our successes determine whether we survive—as individuals and as the human race.”

“Newton likes ideas,” Maggie said. “Books hold thousands of ideas, and libraries hold—well sometimes they hold—millions of books. You can just imagine how he feels about libraries.”
