The Allied Heads of State and their Chiefs of Staff worked together at the war conferences to organize victory in World War II. But at the end of March 1945 Prime Minister Churchill made a point of mentioning the contribution of General George C. Marshall, the Chief of Staff of the United States Army, in a telegram to Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson in Washington DC: "Pray give General Marshall my warmest congratulations on the magnificent fighting and conduct of the American and Allied Armies under General Eisenhower, and say what a joy it must be to him to see how the armies he called into being by his own genius have won immortal renown.
